As we muse on the mechanical, we might recall that it was on this date (according to most sources, though a few cite the 12th or the 19th of June) in 1902 that Philadelphia restauranteurs Frank Hardart and Joe Horn opened the first Automat in the U.S. A cavernous, waiterless establishment that was a combination of fast (but fresh) food, vending, and a cafeteria. Customers put nickels into slots beside small glass-doored compartments in the Automats and turned a knob. In the compartment next to the slot, food revolved into place for the customer to receive through the glass door.

Horn & Hardart Automats expanded into a chain reaching Manhattan in 1912. With their uniform recipes and centralized commissary system of supplying their restaurants, the Automats were America’s first major fast-food chain.

I recently received these two AWESOME Japanese stationery gems from @ottaross for my Birthday. The uni mechanical pencil is a joy to use. The lead rotates a little every time you lift and press it to the paper leaving a crisp, smooth line. The Harinacs “Staple-less” stapler is A-mazing! It clips folds and tucks a little tab of paper into a slot for up to 10 sheets of paper (Take THAT, BIG staple!). I LOVE THIS STUFF!

Im gonna start reviewing stationery, so heres a start!

I picked up a Uni Kuru Toga Advance, mostly because i wanted to see if the improved mechanism is helpful. I currently mainly use a Kuru Toga Alpha Gel, and absolutely love it.

As for the improved mechanism, it does just do the thing better (rotates the lead slowly as your write). I was pleasantly surprised by the retractable lead sleeve, something my Alpha Gel can't do. The overall build is sturdy and the design is pleasant.

HOWEVER.. i cannot reccomend it, as it has one major flaw. That lead sleeve i praised moments ago, has a LOT of play in it. The lead wiggles as you write, which is deeply unpleasant for a picky girl like me as well as making it harder to write accurately. I cannot tell if the Kuru Toga mechanism causes this, or the retracting mechanism. I would be interested to see if the Advance Upgrade has this problem.

@futurebird how about a #Staedtler 780 Mars #MechanicalPencil. The only consumable are sticks of graphite and clay with a small metal ferule at the end. I’ve been waiting for the orenznero to come down to a sensible price and the time has come. (The Kuru Toga Dive has also become available at sub-£80 prices, but it’s still a daft price!)

I love how mechanical pencils have evolved to solve problems we don’t really have - in this case, self-propelling lead extension; the Kuru Toga rotates the lead so it stays uniformly sharp, and the Dive adds controllable auto-feeding.

Is this #MechanicalPencil nirvana?

I was looking around online for lead and eraser replacements and found that the delful seems to have been discontinued, which made me strangely sad. It's weird to have an insignificant object that you assume you could always just buy another one of disappear with no fanfare whatsoever.

Oh snap, I've had a Ticonderoga Executive #MechanicalPencil following me around since the mid-'00s. It felt great in hand and I grew attached. I lost it a year ago, and the cat eventually found it tucked behind a sofa foot and batted it into the room. But something was loose in a way I couldn't fix.

I decided to take one more crack at disassembling and found detachable piece I hadn't noticed. We are back in business! #SmallWins

Different from my usual #FountainPen content, but this time I decided to splurge on a #MechanicalPencil and get the Rotring 600!

It has a good weight to it and it feels nice to hold. I went with the 0.5mm version because I tend to draw a lot of fine details; my only complaint is that there isn’t a 0.3mm version (if there is, JetPens didn’t carry it).
