Abair co-labhairt! What a conference! Discussions on AI use in an age where it's an inbuilt feature of most software, and on cultural appropriation and community consultation. And opportunities to meet new people and build our own writerly connections.
I was so grateful to get the chance to participate in the CYA Success Panel.
Thank you CYA for the past 21 years you've given the Brisbane Meanjin community.

I just completed 3307 push-ups in 24 days to raise funds for mental health, specifically for my local headspace branch (Woolloongabba), which offers free, confidential health services to young people aged 12 to 25 with key focus areas of mental health, alcohol and other drugs, education and employment support, and physical and sexual health.
3307 is the number of people who died by suicide in Australia in 2024 alone.

How beautiful is Bulimba on a blue sky Brisbane Meanjin day? It was wonderful to step into Riverbend Books today, with its wonderful community vibe; every time I pass by, there seems to be a bookish event happening, including today! It's a thrill to find my books on the shelves of such a vibrant space.

One of the coolest things about having a novel come out is the push it gives you to explore bookshops outside of your usual haunts. Today saw me popping into Stones Corner for the first time in literal decades to visit Books@Stones, where I was thrilled to spot The Boy Maeve on a display table!

They are currently excavating above the palm grove, along the driving range fence. There's another excavator further down along the fence, to the North East.

They were already putting the fences up today along Victoria Park Road. That wasn't much warning, was it. (4 days)

There you go. Just a couple of weeks after fencing most of the Herston side of #Barrambin / #VictoriaPark, GIICA just sent an email to annonce they will close off even more: everything south of the #QUT campus, and around York's Hollow too. We're just left with a small area around the pump track.
No date, just "in the next few weeks".
Justification? "To ensure the safety of the community, residents and workers." Whatever that means. 🤷🏽
And still no plans. -

I took a trip up to visit Pulp Fiction Books, which can be found on the upper floor of the old style city arcade at 144 Adelaide Street in the CBD. You go up the whitest stairwell you'll have ever seen, that twists and turns its way up to the next floor. And then there's the bookstore, filled with speculative stories of the best kinds.

Secure your #ResBazQLD 2026 spot to catch close to 50 workshops, and keynotes like Celise Gibson's:
"Sovereignty as practice: Rethinking research from Indigenous standpoints"
Celise is a proud Wadjigan woman (Batjamalh language group), artist and researcher. Her practice brings together cultural heritage, archives and storytelling to trace connections between memory, materiality and Indigenous knowledge systems.
Her keynote address will explore Indigenous sovereignty as enacted through everyday research practice. Drawing on Indigenist principles, it considers how methods, citation and scholarly practice can either reproduce colonial frameworks or uphold Indigenous authority, relational accountability and knowledge integrity.
