  1. A quotation from Arendt

The concentration camps, by making death itself anonymous (making it impossible to find out whether a prisoner is dead or alive), robbed death of its meaning as the end of a fulfilled life. In a sense they took away the individual’s own death, proving that henceforth nothing belonged to him and he belonged to no one. His death merely set a seal on the fact that he had never existed.

Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) German-American philosopher, political theorist
Origins of Totalitarianism, Part 3, ch. 12 “Totalitarianism in Power,” sec. 3 (1951)

  5. A quotation from Richard Feynman

It doesn’t seem to me that this fantastically marvelous universe, this tremendous range of time and space and different kinds of animals, and all the different planets, and all these atoms with all their motions, and so on, all this complicated thing can merely be a stage so that God can watch human beings struggle for good and evil — which is the view that religion has. The stage is too big for the drama.

    Richard Feynman (1918-1988) American physicist

  6. A quotation from Hoffer

Passionate hatred can give meaning and purpose to an empty life. Thus people haunted by the purposelessness of their lives try to find a new content not only by dedicating themselves to a holy cause but also by nursing a fanatical grievance. A mass movement offers them unlimited opportunities for both.

Eric Hoffer (1902-1983) American writer, philosopher, longshoreman
True Believer: Thoughts on the Nature of Mass Movements, Part 3, ch. 14, § 75 (3.14.75) (1951)

  7. A quotation from Euripides

MESSENGER:       I have not now first learn’d that all
Th’ affairs of mortal men are a mere shadow:
Nor would I fear to say that those, who most
Boast of their wisdom and their deep research,
The widest in the paths of folly stray.
No mortal man is happy: if the tide
Of wealth flows in upon him, one may be
More fortunate than others, happy never.

Euripides (485?-406? BC) Greek tragic dramatist
    Medea [Μήδεια], l. 1224ff (431 BC) [tr. Potter (1814)]

  8. ✮ Blinker ✮

We spend so much time blinking and looking away,
we blink so much that we don’t realize our fuse is alight.
    A turn of the dial,
    into another scene,
    never rooted in the moment,
    as transient as everything mortal.
We blink, to erase the unpleasant,
    we blink, to jump forward,
    coil our bodies around rest,
    wrap paychecks inside our hands,
so, we can blink a little more.
We skip and jump out of the day,
when tomorrow is worse than today,
    we blink it away,
as if we have unlimited blinks,
and soon enough we’ll hit a wall
and wish we could have kept our eyes open
    more frequently.

Here today; gone tomorrow, never take anything for granted.

When complaining about long walks, someone is dreaming of having such luxury. Walks that people take for granted mean everything to someone else who is bound by a condition that prevents them from doing so. They could be bedridden; they could be hiding in fear in a war zone; they could be impeded by physical conditions that limit them.

You complain about tidying up. It’s because you have a home. You stress out over traffic. It’s because you have a car. You can’t deal with the noise. You have a family. Someone out there wants what you have but can only dream of it.

When frowning in dissatisfaction over a prepared meal, think about that person who took time and poured every ounce of their heart, hoping to bring you happiness. Think.

Be grateful that you are in school; not everyone is afforded such an opportunity. Not as a promise to secure a job, but to learn. Bitterness often comes from discounting what people already have. Contentment, as they say, is the key to happiness. Dream, but be forgiving. If it’s yours, it will come to fruition. If not, steady your heart and live with what you have.

Never neglect people or things that add, give, and bring value to your life. Blessed are those who can’t count how many people they love with their fingers. If you do, you’re already rich. Hurray! You will have someone to turn to.

At the end of the day, when all that you take for granted is gone, what will be left of you?

  13. A quotation from Teddy Roosevelt

There are many kinds of success in life worth having. It is exceedingly interesting and attractive to be a successful business man, or railroad man, or farmer, or a successful lawyer or doctor; or a writer, or a President, or a ranchman, or the colonel of a fighting regiment, or to kill grizzly bears and lions. But for unflagging interest and enjoyment, a household of children, if things go reasonably well, certainly makes all other forms of success and achievement lose their importance by comparison.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901–1909)
Autobiography, ch. 9 “Outdoors and Indoors” (1913)

  14. A quotation from Bill Watterson

CALVIN: (walking through snowy field) You know, Hobbes, it seems the only time most people go outside is to walk to their cars. We have houses, electricity, plumbing, heat …. Maybe we’re so sheltered and comfortable that we’ve lost touch with the natural world and forgotten our place in it. Maybe we’ve lost our awe of nature. That’s why I want to ask you, as a tiger, a wild animal close to Nature, what you think we’re put on Earth to do. What’s our purpose in life? Why are we here?
HOBBES: (stating the obvious) We’re here to devour each other alive.
CALVIN: (back in the house, yelling) Turn on the lights! Turn up the heat!
