Mealybugs' missing mitochondrial genes aren't missing after all, rather, they are tucked in on the opposite DNA strand running the other way. This sort of trickery I only knew from viral genomes.
The amount of genes we may have missed in existing genomes might be a scarily large number. Reminded of the human Y chromosome story, that started at only 3 genes ca. year 2000 and now is already at over 300.

I took this 1mm mealybug off the seed-grown basil plant growing under the plant light. After shooting the video, I felt sorry for the bug, so I let it go outside.
#BugsAreCool but I need to find a way to protect my basil and snack-kale* from the #mealybugs… 😩🌱🥬
*snack-size Lacinato kale for our companion rats.
