OK, Analysis verwirrt mich, aber das hier ganz besonders:

Hier eine normale reelle Funktion f(x) = 1 − x², geplottet auf [−1, 1]. Ein schöner Hügel mit lokalem Maximum bei Null.

Komplexe Zahlen kann man nicht sinnvoll anordnen, also gibt es per se keine Extremwertaufgaben für f(z). Aber wir können |f| nehmen, das ist reell.

Und nun kommts: Wenn f(z) komplex differenzierbar ist und |f| ein lokales Maximum im Inneren annimmt, dann ist f konstant!

Wir bauen uns heute neue Zahlen aus 1 und exp(x)-ln(y)!
Es ist:

exp(1) - ln(1) = e
exp(e) - ln(1) = e^e
exp(1) - ln(e^e) = 0
exp(0) - ln(1) = 1
exp(1) - ln(e) = e - 1

Dabei haben wir nur die Konstante 1 und eml(x,y) := exp(x) - ln(y) benutzt und dann sukzessive Zahlen, die wir schon gefunden haben.

FRACTRAN ist eine esoterische Programmiersprache die von John Conway 1987 erfunden wurde.

Ein Programm darin besteht aus einer Folge von rationalen Zahlen, wie z.B. “13/21, 385/13, 1/7, 3/11, 7/2, 1/3”.

Die Eingabe ist eine natürliche Zahl n. Dann sucht man von vorne eine rationale Zahl p/q in der Liste, sodass np/q eine natürliche Zahl ist. Diese natürliche Zahl wird dann als neue Eingabe wieder von vorne in die Liste geschickt.

Google hat mal wieder #Mathe gemacht. Oder genauer gesagt hochrelevante Optimierungsprobleme weiter optimiert. Eins davon ist das Packen von #Hexagons (🥰) in Hexagons was z.B. beim nicht-regelkonformen Auslegen von Dorfromantik-Karten auftreten kann.

Also wenn ihr z.B. 11 Hexagons mit Seitenlänge 1 in ein großes Hexagon packen wollt und das große Hexagon soll möglichst klein sein, dann macht ihr das am besten so.

Last week was special.

The Crit Care programme at #EdinburghUni awarded its first ever #MScs.

After 5 years in the making (2 years of work even before the first student logged in!) and a pandemic during lauch year we wondered if this moment would ever come.

Congratulations to all our graduating students and to all my amazing colleagues but particularly my partner in crime Graham Nimmo (second from left) who retires this year.
