The Maryland Poor People's Campaign congratulates Save Bethesda African Cemetery for its recent court victory!
The ruling permits them to proceed with expert testimony and preserves their ability to present archaeological, historical, forensic, and ancient DNA evidence, subject to further proceedings before the Court.

While even the author of the original article does not feel that $140k is literally the new poverty line, his piece has prompted important conversations about "benefit cliffs" and what level of income is actually required for a family to cover the basics *without outside assistance.*

2. Agree to repay states for fronting money for SNAP; OR
3. End the government shutdown while protecting ACA health insurance subsidies. -
Maryland is one of 25 states that, along with the District of Columbia, are suing the Trump Administration to force it to use SNAP contingency funds to help keep hungry Americans fed if the federal government shutdown continues into November.

#Homelessness in #MontgomeryCounty, MD is on the rise: from 2021 to 2025, there was a 162% increase in the number of people experiencing homelessness. Changes to #SNAP, the possible loss of subsidies for Affordable Care Act (#ACA) health plans, and other factors may well increase the numbers.

Maryland’s "SUN Bucks," a summer food program for children, served a record-high number of students this summer, thanks largely to an innovative approach to enrollment: It automatically enrolled students who were already receiving SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program), Temporary Cash Assistance, or free or reduced-price school lunches; enrolled in Medicaid; or were in out-of-home care. -
New #Medicaid work requirements in the #OBBBA, combined with the Trump admin’s attacks on labor protections, particularly around #disability, are devstating many #disabled & chronically ill people who want to work.

The executive order GoV. Moore signed on Sept. 3 "aims to fast-track housing development to reduce the approximately 96,000-unit shortage Maryland currently faces." The order explains that the lack of affordable #housing options has created an “imminent threat of widespread social and economic disruption.”
