Last talk is from Chris Mentzel
giving some insight and examples from what came out of the #MDCsummit #datacitation corpus hackathon earlier this week. Went well and there were 5 projects that came out of it.

Question from Jennifer Lin on what is curreently missing/needs improvement in the corpus? Messiness, other affiliations (partner institutions), going from primary citations to secondary-tertiary-etc., i.e. to see how the data is moving and being re-used.

Clarification that the DC corpus looks at data citations and accession numbers extracted by ML approaches #MDCsummit

The Making Data Count meeting has been... interesting….Much talk about how to "incentivise" researchers to share their data.
20 years ago, software devs figured out that sharing source-code was A Good Idea because it enabled them to build better software.
Academic researcher seem stymied by FOMO. "If I share my data before I've published, then someone else might get the credit and I won't progress in my career”.

Maybe academic researchers get the environment they deserve :-(

Really important point from Peter O'Donovan on how Wellcome Trust uses data citation metrics: it is categorically not about using it to evaluate researchers when allocating funding, but as one of a number of signals for Wellcome to assess and improve their own approach to encourage good practice.

I think it's really interesting that no-one in this panel session has mentioned power differences, although all the speakers have IMHO alluded to them. When we try to affect change by tweaking the criteria by which people are valued, how often do we think about who has the power to have those criteria interpreted in their favour, or to make someone do the work to meet them, and who lacks that power...?

Stories are important, Cameron Neylon saying the COKI dashboard recently got a big boost in accesses. Figured out openAI bots have just started accessing it, so ChatGPT now uses their data for queries on OA. Bot accesses shouldn't be counted in usage metrics but is this a good example of wider impact? #MDCsummit

Devika Madalli on the challenges for the global South. There is huge amounts of data to be shared from countries like India (which has had data sharing mandates for a decade), but there are many challenges getting this out including the need for standards for their federated sharing approaches they use #MDCsummit

First panel today is on the Institutional focus on data evaluation. Eva Mendez charing and wearing her CoARA hat, and featuring Michael Dougherty from HELIOSopen, Cameron Neylon, Robin Champieux and Devika Madalli. #MDCsummit

Day 2 of #MDCsummit kicking off here at the Wellcome Trust, @Iratxe letting us know the order of the day. And giving us a reflection on what is happening in the data metrics space. Stressing we need to take a research approach to data metrics issue and provide an evidence base, working with bibliometrics community to create quantitative data

Day 1 of #MDCsummit ending with @@chodacki. on the takeaways from the day, and goals for day 2. The case studies presented today show the challenges and nuance required (both technical and societal) for responsible use of data metrics

This week just in the UK has seen the UK DARIAH Day, Digital Humanities Congress, RSECon and Make Data Count Summit and I really want to bring all these communities (who already have a reasonable amount overlap) together into the same room and stir just to see what falls out... 😂

on how bibliometricians should be driven to construct things that are meaningful and relevant rather than just gather any data that is available. The journal impact factor is a perfect example of the dangers of using data collected for one thing inappropriately for another #MDCsummit

Guy Cochrane talking about granularity, likening genomics data to the telephone. Individual datasets don’t have much value until you connect and aggregate many datasets to allow you compare them to each other #MDCSummit

chairing. Bringing together peakers working at the coalface including Jose Benito Gonzalez Lopez (Zenodo), Guy Cochrane (Global Biodata Consortium) and Graham Smith (Springer Nature)

Overall, very sensible views being put forward at #MDCSummit thus far, but a couple of personal bugbears keep cropping up:

Not a fan of "data-driven" anything: data is one source of information but shouldn't be driving. On the same note, data is not "more objective" than any other form of evidence, but asserting that it's objective is a good way to conceal the inevitable subjectivity of its collection, processing, analysis etc

Next panel Daniella Lowenberg is taking us beyond the generic data use case to other examples, covering data evaluation beyond the static data ecosystem. JB Poline, Nick Juty, Ivan Rodero all covering composite and diverse data types, as well as government, commercial and sensitive data #MDCsummit

Next question from Mercè Crosasis how do we go ”Beyond the DMP”? Been some improvements in infrastructure and tooling over the years, but what should the next steps be? What would the panelist’s like to happen next? #MDCsummit

Different stakeholder perspetives here. Dagmar Meyer from ERC: All research is based on data, so for the researcher the importance of data is a no brainier. For a funder they are thinking about this from the perspective of ROI #mdcsummit
