Never mind the symbolics. Arsenal lit a fire at their training ground as a motivational image. But it was Manchester City who brought the fire to the game. City dared more and deservedly won. Better principles - more attacking. Better team - more leaders. Better manager - more adventurous and experienced. And so it’s advantage a fired-up City in the title race.
Pep Guardiola and his big-game hunters can smell wounded foe, can sense victory will be theirs. City have big players relishing the pressure in the biggest game of the season. Bernardo Silva outstanding, small of frame but huge of heart. He’ll be hugely missed as ball-winning player, creative player, team player and role model. Rodri commanding. Haaland pouncing when opportunity knocked. Cherki dribbling and dazzling. O’Reilly so young but so mature in his positioning and decision-making. Guehi a top defender and leader, such a massively influential signing in January.
Arsenal? Second again? They need more than fire now. They need City to slip up. Guardiola’s side do still have to go Everton and Bournemouth but they have the belief and the momentum. They know the way to the finishing line, it's a muscle memory.
Arsenal tried hard. They were gritty, good pressing first half, some promising counters but they dropped off, invited City on and Pep’s men need no second invitation. Arsenal invested heavily this season, and will doubtless do so again this summer, as the years of hurt lengthens since the Invincibles. Arteta needs more flair as much as fire. He also needs a re-think on his approach.
His subs will come under scrutiny. Arteta inexplicably kept the fading Odegaard on. Odegaard embodies Arsenal’s nice, neat football but doesn’t hurt elite opponents enough. Arteta could have moved Eze central not taken him off.
Arsenal will argue fine lines, Havertz had a huge chance at the death, but were fortunate that Gabriel was not sent off for pushing his forehead into Haaland’s. If/when the fire is fully extinguished, the Arsenal inquest will be long and painful. It sounds like it's already begun amongst their fans, their fire snuffed out by City. #MCIARS

In a split second, Haaland gets away from Gabriel to finish. 47th goal of the season for club and country in his 52nd game. Elite. #MCIARS

Manchester City building, threatening more, O’Reilly class. But Arteta’s approach vindicated so far. Arsenal pressing high up, and it’s concerning City. Havertz, preferred to Gyokeres, already having a huge impact, leading the line, pressing and scoring. Wingers tracking back and need to as City have so much mobile menace wide through Doku and Semenyo. Little that Arsenal could do with a goal of great quality from Cherki, the king from Lyon. Magical dribble eluding Gabriel, Hincapie, Saliba and Rice. Far more entertaining game than expected. #MCIARS

… Tony Adams also believes that contact and blocking at set-pieces has become excessive in the modern game. “It’s gone too far,” Adams says. Analysing the differences between Arsenal’s defence under George Graham and now under Mikel Arteta, Adams says, “The game is very different. It’s quicker. There’s less physical contact. The levels of set-pieces - and the contacts and the blocks - it’s gone too far.” His old club are frequently accused of the dark arts at set-pieces, including grappling and blocking to free some space for a team-mate to attack the ball.
Yet Adams acknowledges that Graham’s side had routines. “We used to use blocks." Arsenal had a ploy they used against Spurs in the 1993 FA Cup semi-final. “Andy Linighan runs inside, blocks Neil Ruddock, and I go around the back, free as a dog - bang, in you go. I’ve scored the header. In the FA Cup final, I’ve blocked for Andy and he’s got the winner against Sheffield Wednesday. So we used to do it. Viv Anderson taught me how to do it when he came from Forest. He used to take people out.
“If you’re teaching defenders how to defend from corners…it used to be ‘ball, player’. What’s that song? ‘Looking back over my shoulder?’ Who sung that?” Mike and the Mechanics. “We used to do that all the time. Ball and player, ball and player. Now it’s just ‘grab hold of you’. How do you teach a defender to do that? What’s that about?”
Set-plays are nothing new. Steve Bould used to flick the ball on at the near-post to Adams at the back-post. “We had a little flick-on, didn't we? I used to go in like a nutter and slide through the Old Trafford turf. I used to love all that. The boots coming round my face. It’s a great fix! It worked for a while.”

Arsenal legend Tony Adams believes Declan Rice should be their captain. “Declan is a super leader and super player. I feel he should be Arsenal captain.” Rice wore the armband against Sporting Lisbon in midweek and is expected to lead Arsenal again in today’s summit meeting with Manchester City at the Etihad.
Even if Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard were fit to start, Adams argues that Rice should lead the side, a point he made at the start of the season. “I thought he (Odegaard) just needed the freedom to go and play without the extra stuff added,” Adams says. “When you talk about leadership, it's quite difficult and it has changed.
"I was the first one in training every morning. I thought that was it (leadership). I'm going to create an environment where we all talk about our stuff. Back then, we were all free to have opinions, we can all talk around the table and then we do what George (Graham) wants!
“After I made the comment about Odegaard, Arteta went to the players and said: ‘who do you want as captain?’ And they all went (‘Odegaard’). Well, they're not going to say it to him, are they? ‘We love Odegaard! Hooray!’ So, why do you need your captain, then?’”
Adams believes the captain should be a more robust character, one more in his mould as a more physical player. “Gabriel, these kind of players for the Arsenal.” Adams was at Wembley for Arsenal’s last meeting with City, the Carabao Cup final defeat, and saw how City’s captain Bernardo Silva liaised with Pep Guardiola. “You're looking at Silva with his relationship with Pep. You could see an instant chemistry there. There was a leader there and he's like, ‘if there's a problem’ (he’ll sort it)’. I didn't see the same with Arsenal.”
Adams, who has just published a new book “1996”, also opened up on how close he was to joining Manchester United that year. He was off the booze after Euro 96, and interested United even more now that “I’d got clean and sober”. Adams was concerned about the club’s ambition and their ability to catch United. Arsenal’s incoming manager, Arsene Wenger, was an unknown quantity and was not arriving until October.
So Adams spoke to the Arsenal chairman, Peter Hill-Wood. “Peter said: ‘we’ve got a good man coming, Arsene’s on the way’.
“He phones me in the car and says, ‘we’ve got a new investor, Danny Fiszman's coming in’. He's got £50m and you're going to treble your salary’.” (Fiszman was already on the board; 1996 saw his buying of further shares from David Dein). “I went, ‘oh! I'll stay!’ And then I told Alex, ‘sorry, I'm not coming in’.”
Adams tells the story partly to highlight that captains were stronger and more vocal then. “We hadn't won the league for five years, and I've got clean and sober, and got a bit of self-respect back. So I went, ‘what's the ambition of the club?’ So you got a club captain talking to the owner about ambition for Arsenal Football Club. It will never happen (now). I don't think you can see it in the industry that it is today. Who is going to challenge now as captain?” #AFC #MCIARS 1/2
