  1. I love "Story" Songs.

Unfortunately not enough bands do them. The experimental #Band #MC900FtJesus made a number of them where they would tell a story set to background music.

Their #Song New Moon is one of my favorites. They drop their #Rap #Hiphop sound and go all #Jazz for this one. It's great. The #Music here really sets the mood for their story about a girl who loves fast cars!

What are some of your favorite story songs?

Seriously. I want to listen to them.

MC 900 Ft Jesus, “The City Sleeps” from Welcome to My Dream, 1991

    Lyric:
“Darkness envelopes the scene like a shroud
A veil of emptiness hangs from the clouds
Filling up the cracks in this desolate place
Cradled by the night in an icy embrace”

Mark Griffin aka #MC900FtJesus put out 3 full length albums. The first, Hell With the Lid Off, was unpolished, not always in a good way; harder #rap edges mingled with quirky concepts and samples in an odd jumble; the third, One Step Ahead of the Spider, a looser, more playful, jazzy affair. Welcome To My Dream sits at a tuneful #funk-laden crossroads of the two.

“The City Sleeps” is a tale so clearly drawn, the #FilmNoir atmosphere so thick, we can see the steam rising from manhole covers in the lamppost light, taking us frame-by-frame through an imaginary graphic novel, turning a menacing tale of arson and murder into a work of perfect, satisfying craftsmanship.

  4. If you ever see a spoken word artist being backed by a small jazz ensemble, you can be assured that _Falling Elevators_ is the piece they wish they’d written.
