💾 GPT vs. MBR pentru un sistem Dual-Boot cu Linux și Windows: Ghid complet de alegere!
Atunci când configurezi un sistem dual-boot (Linux + Windows), alegerea schemei de partiționare a discului — GPT (GUID Partition Table) sau MBR (Master Boot Record) — este una dintre cele mai importante decizii tehnice.
Deși ambele variante funcționează, GPT este alegerea modernă, sigură și recomandată pe aproape orice sistem creat în ultimul deceniu.⚖️ Care este opțiunea potrivită pentru situația ta?
👉 Alege GPT dacă: • Ai un calculator creat după anul 2011/2012 (cu interfață UEFI). • Instalezi Windows 11 alături de Linux (Windows 11 impune obligatoriu modul UEFI și tabela GPT). • Discul tău de stocare (SSD/HDD) are o capacitate mai mare de 2 TB. • Vrei o configurare mai simplă a bootloader-ului Linux (GRUB sau systemd-boot utilizează o partiție dedicată ESP - EFI System Partition în formate GPT, izolând complet încărcătoarele de sistem).
👉 Alege MBR doar dacă: • Instalezi sistemele pe un calculator foarte vechi, dotat exclusiv cu interfață Legacy BIOS ce nu oferă suport pentru bootare UEFI. • Folosești versiuni vechi de sisteme de operare pe 32-biți.
🛠️ Sfat practic pentru Dual-Boot pe sisteme moderne:
Asigură-te că atât Windows, cât și distribuția de Linux sunt instalate în același mod (ideal UEFI + GPT). Amestecarea modurilor de boot (de exemplu, un Windows instalat în mod Legacy pe MBR și un Linux în mod UEFI pe GPT) va îngreuna detectarea ambelor sisteme în meniul de pornire al GRUB.
Pentru orice sistem modern, combinația GPT + UEFI oferă cel mai rapid timp de pornire și cea mai mare flexibilitate! 🚀

TIL about hybrid MBR/GUID partition tables, where the GPT on a disk is duplicated in an MBR table for (outdated) compatibility purposes. Apparently macOS still does this under some circumstances.
Fun fact 1: This means you can have an MBR with a partition that MBR doesn't support, like a >2TB EXFAT partition!
Fun fact 2: If Windows sees an MBR, it doesn't bother with the GUID table, and it insists that partition is invalid!
Slightly more fun fact: The approach described below, using gdisk to create a new blank MBR table and leave the GUID table unchanged, fixed the problem and took less than a minute, and Fedora has gdisk in its standard repo.
Edit: I've expanded on this for today's #blaugust entry. (Yes, I do plan on posting about non-tech stuff this month too. It's just worked out that way for the first week.)

Finally fixed a few issues with the `driveinfo` program. Checksums are now calculated and compared to the stored checksums in the JSON output. Also cleaned up the option parsing as well.

Wooo, `driveinfo` gets some nice JSON output. Took a bit of refactoring to get it looking right, but I'll take it.

Another revision or two of the `driveinfo` command done and I think I have almost all of the information. Spent some time getting EBR and logical partitions showing everything it needed to as well as being able to follow the logical partition chain using either CHS or LBA.

Finally got all of the GPT and MBR code put together, most of the bugs fixed, and released it as a downloadable Linux binary. Does a pretty good job of reading the data and giving out way too much information regarding the MBR and/or GUID partition table.

В этом тексте я написал про то как написать крохотный, но очень полезный загрузчик. В программировании на STM32 бывает нужно сделать так, чтобы загрузчик оказался не в начале Flash памяти а в конце. Поэтому надо написать отдельную крохотную прошивку первичного загрузчика, которая просто при старте передает управление на другой адрес в физической памяти. Такие прошивки я называю MBR (Master Boot record).
