  5. Manitoba has big dreams for wind farms. Not every small town wants to host one. #MB: Summary The Manitoba Métis Federation and U.K.-based Renewable Energy Systems are proposing a 200-megawatt wind farm in rural Manitoba as part of a provincial push to install 600 megawatts of majority Indigenous-owned wind power by 2035. Residents of Polonia, Man., are opposed to the plan. They worry it would be a blight on the beautiful landscape, cause negative… wind-watch.org/news/2026/07/14 #windpower #windenergy

  8. Residents launch letter-sending campaign against wind turbines #MB: A group of area residents has sent thousands of letters to offices in Manitoba objecting to a wind turbine project that was proposed near Polonia this spring. A total of 20,498 letters had been sent to local and provincial government offices as of last week, RM of Rosedale resident Trevor Bennett told the Sun. The letters follow after Bennett and a group of locals organized a… wind-watch.org/news/2026/07/04 #windpower #windenergy

  11. Opposition forms to First Nation’s bid for wind farm #MB: A group of residents in southwestern Manitoba is concerned a proposed wind farm could impact their way of life. RM of Lorne resident Bill Harrison said the Swan Lake First Nation proposal to build 30 to 35 wind turbines would disturb day-to-day life and have adverse environmental and economical impacts. “Agriculture is a major consideration in Manitoba, it’s a major provider of food. 12. Fun product spotted on Mercari Japan: PowerBook 500-series "tattoos”. They're stickers shaped to go on your PowerBook trackpad. This was a novelty since these were the first PowerBooks to sport trackpads rather than trackballs! (and the first laptops at all to have a trackpad where you'd expect it today)

The years on the calendar stickers clearly date this product…

  14. Haha, oops! That 11 yen CRT at HARD OFF ended up coming home with me…

We got an iiyama MT-8617E, a 17" CRT with a Mitsubishi Diamondtron tube.

Looking around the back in addition to VGA D-Sub, we got BNC connectors revealing we have Sync-on-Green support.

Did a web search which turned up an original flyer and the specs page from the manual.

  16. Weighing profits against transforming ‘beautiful country’ of wind-turbine proposal south of Brandon #MB: A major wind-turbine project has been proposed for the Carroll area south of Brandon. Innergex Renewable Energy has made preliminary agreements with landowners representing roughly 12,000 acres and is looking to install between 30 and 35 turbines. The company is competing for the chance to supply Manitoba Hydro with 200 megawatts of Indigenous… wind-watch.org/news/2026/06/14 #windpower #windenergy

The first visible effect of the Strait of Hormuz blockage in our little backwater of #japan - the first “crude oil conservation packaging” without colors has arrived, as the manufacturer is claiming a shortage of naphtha (the government disagrees and calls it a marketing ploy. tbh it’s probably both)

  19. First project as a house-owner completed.

We had issues with the yard flooding and leaving big pools of water when there was a big rain.

Started by going to the hardware store, picked up a ton of concrete U-drains.

  21. I am proud to present GlobalTalk Chat 1.2, taking it from a rushed #MARCHintosh hack-job to something I'd be proud to release as shareware 30 years ago!

The headline update is it now allows anyone to host their own room! And it works on any AppleTalk network, not just #GlobalTalk

Get it on BaroNet, or Macintosh Garden macintoshgarden.org/apps/globa

And for anyone who has been curious how it all works, documented source code is available! github.com/kalleboo/GlobalTalk

  23. When we went camping the other week I found my Moondrop Chus among the camping gear, I thought I had lost them falling out of my backpack somewhere!

Took a walk this evening and was enjoying the sound, then after I got home my phone slipped out of my hand, ripping the earbuds out of my ears. They're still ringing painfully

This is why I've been using Bluetooth earbuds exclusively since… 2006 apparently?? (20 years ago wtf I'm old, and I was a BABY back then)

I'm just too clumsy for wires!

  25. One of the two fanciest of all fancy sparrows* (white crowned) visiting my garden this spring, today. This particular gentleman was very cooperative in posing where I could focus on him.

*fancy as a term designates sparrows that do not reside in this region year-round. Rankings determined by length of residence in said garden. Terms and conditions may vary in your region. Residents of Quebec get a 👋.

Southwestern Manitoba wind farm opponents worried about environmental impact, property values #MB: A group of southwestern Manitoba landowners opposed to the creation of a 200-megawatt wind farm in their area say they’re ready to fight the multimillion-dollar project, which the Manitoba Métis Federation says will help meet the province’s energy needs. 31. #GlobalTalk Pro Tip:

You know that progress dialog that shows up when you try to connect to some hosts? That’s it trying to use AppleShare IP to connect to the host over TCP/IP instead of AppleTalk, which will not work over GlobalTalk. Hit cancel and it will drop back to AppleTalk instantly.

Or BETTER YET, install AppleShare Client Setup, and change the TCP Lookup to 1 second and you’ll never see the dialog again. You might want to raise it back up if you connect to OS X Macs on your LAN.

  33. For anyone debugging memory issues in your Classic Mac OS program, I can recommend Metrowerks ZoneRanger, which shows a live view of memory allocations

In this demo, you can see how my old version allocates all those tiny blocks of memory for chat lines but then just leaks them, but the fixed version frees it

Legend: Red blocks are non-relocatable, yellow are relocatable (so they move around when the memory manager wants to), and green is free

  35. Could this be the first battery-powered, fully-wireless ImageWriter II in history? Well, it might at least be the first one on #GlobalTalk!

Just in time for the end of #MARCHintosh, a cheap Farallon AirDock showed up on Yahoo Auctions, and since I already had one, I had to try this stunt - adding an IRTalk node to GlobalTalk.

It is currently live on GlobalTalk if you want to try it, I'll probably leave it up until either the battery runs out or I deem it too much of a tripping hazard.

  37. And it’s time for my fourth and final #MARCHintosh project for 2026, TalkCrawler AD. It’s an After Dark Module for TalkCrawler that will let you watch #GlobalTalk leisurely scroll past in one of two different styles

There is a standalone version as well if you don't want to install After Dark

Note you will need to run a re-scan in TalkCrawler Lite 1.4 (just released) before it can show anything

Available on landisk/Blackbird on BaroNet. Video in first reply.

  38. Announcing my third #MARCHintosh 2026 project - the MARCHintosh Canvas!

If you're familiar with Reddit's /r/place, pxls space, or Wplace, you’ll know what this is - a shared canvas anyone can place pixels onto in real-time.

Only this time, it's over the venerable AppleTalk protocol, with the public server accessible to anyone on #GlobalTalk :)

Feel free to drop by and leave your mark - available in the usual places (landisk, Blackbird) on BaroNet

  39. Here's my second #MARCHintosh project for 2026 - TalkCrawler Lite! A little program to keep track of which #GlobalTalk printers and shares you've visited or left a greeting on!

I rushed this one out so I can get to using it, so it's less polished than Chat, and might not work so hot on 68k Macs. I'm not sure why opening files is so damn slow.

Demo video in the first reply. Available on Blackbird or landisk on the BaroNet share.

  40. Introducing my first #MARCHintosh project - #GlobalTalk Chat 1.0! The AppleTalk-native (no TCP/IP) chat system, now re-written from the ground-up as a native Mac Toolbox application in C.

You can get it NOW on “Blackbird” or “landisk” in the “BaroNet” zone on GlobalTalk.
