    Maynooth University Library Cat Update

    Maynooth University Library Cat seems to have survived Storm Austen intact. In fact, all we experienced here in Maynooth was a moderate amount of overnight rain and a bit of a breeze.

    He seems to spending a bit more time these days at the entrance to South Campus on Kilcock Road, where he is pictured here doing his ablutions. His more usual spot is off in the distance, on the left of the picture, past the Library. The Kilcock Rd entrance was picketed during last week’s industrial action, so perhaps he thinks we’re still on strike?

    I’m not in Maynooth right now, but I gather it’s warm there. Not perhaps as warm as here in London (34°C), bit still a bit warm to be wearing a fur coat. Still, it seems that Maynooth Library Cat is surviving…

    Maynooth University Library Cat Update

    This week at Maynooth University numerous parties of schoolkids have been, and are being, shown around the campus. Naturally an important stop on this tour is the abode of Séamus the Library Cat. The weather has been nice this week so far, as it was today, so said feline has generally been out and about and making himself available to be admired. On my way to lunch I managed to bypass a large coach party of schoolgirls and reach the cat’s spot ahead of them. I found Séamus giving himself a good wash and brush-up in anticipation of the arrival of the visitors.

    Maynooth University Library Cat has endured the very cold weather we have had recently, but when I met him this lunchtime he was rather hungry. So much so that he scratched my hand in his anxiety to get at the food I put out for him…

    Maynooth University Library Cat Update

    I saw Maynooth University Library Cat on the way to my office this morning. Most students I saw were heading in the opposite direction, in their Christmas jumpers, to pubs, or at least to queue outside them as they weren’t yet open. I think it will be a quiet day on campus, if not in town. Such is the Maynooth Student Xmas I blogged about yesterday.

    Anyway, as you can see, Séamus was looking a bit disgruntled, though as usual he was receptive to a stroke or two and a head scratch. It had been raining overnight and such food as was in his dish had turned to mush and was in need of replacement. At least his water bowl was full.

    On my way to lunch today I saw Maynooth University Library Cat trying the well-known “staring at an empty dish” ploy. It worked, as it always does..

    When I got to Pugin Hall for my own lunch I was confronted by this

    I didn’t see the bat in question.

    Though not as warm as it has been over the last few days, today still found Maynooth University Library Cat in need of a siesta. There aren’t many students around these days so he’s not disturbed by so many people wanting to pet him, and was sound asleep in a shady spot when I passed by this afternoon.

    It has been a nice day for Bloomsday, though I was forced to spend nearly all of it in my office on campus (including having a sandwich lunch there). Fortunately m’colleague Joost Slingerland sent me this picture of Maynooth University Library Cat basking in the warmth of the outdoors.

    I was on a mission to the South Campus just now and found Maynooth University Library Cat behind bars. He’s actually just resting in the semi-shade behind the gate to conserve energy before the exams start on Friday morning, at which time he will need to make himself available for last-minute consultations and therapeutic petting.

    I forgot to mention that last week I had to run the first Computational Physics laboratory session of the year. When I was setting things up before the session I saw that we had a different version of the operating system on our cluster from what we had two years ago when I last taught this module. Unfortunately he didn’t seem favourably disposed and when I tried to take his picture he turned his back on me.
