Artist notes: The November morning holds promise as the fog drifts low on Active Pass and swirls below a bright blue sky punctuated by wispy clouds in Miners Bay. The Springwater Lodge flanks the shore with aging superiority. I pause and wait, for something, anything really, to break the spell.
Please note that our physical gallery pod is still closed for a while longer due to site renovations. If this painting is still an available, it will be in the first show when the space is reopens again, likely in early October.

Today’s work done!…. in light that changed a thousand times…
“Trees and Shore at Oyster Bay” by Terrill Welch, 8 x 10 inch acrylic on gessobord plein air.
Artist Notes: It is midday at the end of June. There is a breeze in Oyster Bay on Mayne Island and quickly changing filtered light that make for ideal plein air painting conditions. I take it! Knowing where the sun will be in an hour and that the tide is on its way in helps to brush this fresh view lightly into place.

I am celebrating the first day of Spring this year with on of my cherry blossom paintings. Though the Mayne Island Japanese Memorial Garden season of sakura is about a month away and the first plum blossoms are just starting to open, I want us all to be ready for this seasonal spring event with a special story about plein air painting shared in the alt notes of the painting image. After a morning painting in the studio, I went down to the shores of the Salish Sea on Mayne Island for a bit. Mount Baker was catching the last of the afternoon sun. A large first year Glaucous-winged Gull sat atop a sandstone rock while Surfbirds foraged at the water’s edge. A beautiful break in the weather making one more glad than usual to be alive.

This morning took us to Oyster Bay where the seals had moved in close to shore with the winter high tides. An eagle swooped in to land on a sandstone islet at one point. Then the sun came out. I never did make it into the art studio to work on a painting that is midway complete. 😉

Down by the water in Oyster Bay on Mayne Island the mood was quiet and brooding. There is a wind warning in effect. A fairly common occurrence this time of year. Still beauty to be witnessed.

A few snippets from yesterday’s hike in Saint John Point Park on Mayne Island. The day wasn’t very promising and I almost didn’t go but once on the trails it was pleasant enough in pungent earthy dampness with traces of wood smoke coming from nearby homes keeping their inhabitants cozy and dry.
