Our final piece is “The Very Eye of Night” (1955)(https://youtu.be/VsLdAmK_8LE?si=4YPguspF3GUvHwxi), which is one of final films that Maya Deren completed in her lifetime. It was made over the course of 3yrs in collaboration with choreographer Antony Tudor and the Metropolitan Opera Ballet School in NYC

This week’s #LaEsoterica has some strobing and a good deal of imagery that may make people uncomfortable. If this isn’t for you I recommend this (https://youtu.be/LT7HSQhiomQ?si=G5SF2zWbcQrZWDGN) 2022 lecture about Maya Deren’s work through the lens of Black Art- & Dance- History

Happy Birthday, Maya Deren! Born on this day in 1917, the celebrated Ukrainian-born American experimental filmmaker was an important part of the avant-garde in the 1940s and 1950s. Her short film "Meshes of the Afternoon" is considered one of the most influential works in American experimental cinema. @nojarama As a fan of #MayaDeren's #AtLand and #IngmarBergman's #SeventhSeal, I think this music video is one of the best I've seen in years! (And the song ain't too shabby either.)

enjoyable unfinished/liminal Maya Deren. just old enough that it makes me think about how different eras of technology might have affected concepts of spirituality. with a little selective editing you could pass this off as a retro-themed Backrooms video.

:loveHeart:Was just searching for an older post with a video from me (already deleted) and found yours instead.
I was totally fascinated how timeless this film still is.
That's a thing many directors try, but fail to pull off. This could easily be a music video from the 80s.

Well, #MayaDeren was born on this day in 1917 so maybe we should all go and watch one of her films at the same time as part of a magical ritual or something?

If you have never seen this 14 minute, #experimental silent #film by #MayaDeren, I encourage you to do so. It's strange, hard to explain, #Jungian, and beautiful in it's own way. It's considered one of the most important films in the history of #cinema and, especially, of #ExperimentalFilm. Some might think it's a little rough around the edges, and it is, but the #creativity carries it. Also, it's total budget was only $275. Amazing.
