  2. As randomly chosen by survey* on Mastodon, our next spotlight is on number 613 on The List, submitted by @markwyner.

If you’re a metalhead, you probably already know this band and album. Sepultura was absolutely key in putting Brazil on the map as a metal country, and this album – their third – was considered an instant classic in the thrash/death metal scene. This album still holds up, I really dig the lyrics in particular.

Sepultura was founded by brothers Max and Igor Cavalera, both of whom left at different points and eventually formed a new band together, Cavalera Conspiracy. In 2023, Cavalera Conspiracy released re-recorded versions of Sepultura’s first two albums, the 1985 Bestial Devastation and the 1986 Morbid Visions, under the Cavalera Conspiracy name (here and here). The sound of these early two albums perhaps had room for improvement whereas Beneath The Remains is great as is, but it’ll be interesting to see if the Cavalera brothers take another go at this one as well.

P.S. The cover for this one also features art by Michael Whelan (on Mastodon: @MichaelWhelan), titled “Nightmare In Red“.

*The survey choices were “Down in the hole”, “Jesus tries to crack a smile”, and “Beneath another shovel load”, with the last being the winning selection (the survey was posted on the 4th of July, hence the lyrics from Soundgarden’s song of the same name). The survey result was translated as picking the first album in The List with one of the phrase’s words in the title, the matching word here being “beneath”.
