Den här skivan brukade jag lyssna på för 25 år sedan tack vare biblioteket i staden där jag bodde, som köpt in ett exemplar. Det är väl närmast överflödigt att nämna att jag nu hör helt andra saker i den här samlingen som släpptes 1994.
Vad hör jag då? Jo, en väldigt sympatisk samling låtar, en pusselbit som passar väldigt bra in i Princes 90-talspussel. Vi pratar funk, r’n b, soul och jazz med mindre av Princes rock och pop-influenser än vi är vana att höra. Det här är låtar från Princes Paisley park/NPG-label, vissa från skivor som sedan släpptes, andra som inte gjorde det. Prince är inblandad i merparten av låtarna, i princip alla utom George Clintons ”Hollywood”.
För mina öron funkar den här samlingen förvånansvärt bra som sammanhållet album. Tyngdpunkten på skivan ligger på kommentarer av svartas livsvillkor i USA under början på 90-talet. ”You will be moved” behandlar Princes och Mavis Staples vrede över mordet på Rodney King, ”Colors” med the Steeles är en vemodig låt om att ja, vilja bli erkänd som människa och ”2gether” samt ”Love Sign” med New power generation respektive 0(+> och Nona Gaye fördömer gatuvåld och vapen. Just ”Colors” tycker jag är underskattad en låt i Princes samlade katalog, den nämns sällan men jag tycker han säger ganska mycket med ganska enkla medel. Dessutom är den svängig.
Nona Gaye har ytterligare en låt på skivan, själfulla ”A woman’s gotta have it”, skriven och inspelad av Bobby Womack. Nona Gaye är ju Marvin Gayes dotter och hennes närvaro på skivan känns betydelsefull. Fokuset på soul, rn’b och funk tillsammans med de samhällsmedvetna och upplyftande texterna var ju något som pappa Marvin var starkt förknippad med. Synd att vi inte fick höra mer av hennes samarbeten med Prince – ”We march” på ”Gold experience” är ytterligare ett exempel. En annan person som jag tror var viktig för hur den här skivan låter är Ricky Peterson, den jazzige klaviaturspelaren från Minneapolis, som bidrog till mycket av Princes produktioner från den här tiden som spelare och medproducent, vilket har sin inverkan på ljudbilden.
Vad finns det mer att säga om skivan? ”Mpls” är en kul men ganska generisk funkdänga som delar en del element med ”Poom Poom” och ”Days of wild” från ”Crystal Ball”. Madhouse ”17” är en besvikelse som inte håller samma klass som övriga släpp under namnet. George Clintons bidrag är också generisk P-funk. Maytes ”If eye Love u 2nite” är pop och rn’b helt uppenbart ämnad för radio. Margie Cox bidrag ”You left me standing at the altar” är en väldigt välskriven och medryckande popballad som är populär hos många Prince-fans. Jag förstår varför även om det inte är min genre.
Som helhet låter ”1-800-NEW-FUNK” bra, särskilt om man lyssnar på den tillsammans med Princes bidrag till Tevin Campbells ”I’m Ready” och Mavis Staples ”The Voice”, eller hans egen ”Gold experience”.

>> While Madhouse (which ended Part 6) may not be a familiar connection to Prince for some, the name “New Power Generation” (or NPG, or NPG Orchestra), likely rings a bell for those who are even just casual Prince fans. The group played both as Prince’s backing band and as a standalone recording group, with an ever-changing list of members. One of the members of the NPG Orchestra at some point was Jim Hughart, who was the bass player on this Tom Waits album. - Tom Waits and Paul Simon both dug Prince, because of course they did.
- Prince has covered Bob Dylan at least a couple times, including “All Along the Watchtower” at that spectacular 2008 Super Bowl performance (Youtube).
- In Bob Dylan’s Theme Time Radio Hour radio show, Dylan played Prince a few times: in the “Cars” episode, he included Prince’s song “Little Red Corvette” (go to 48:40 in this video; the song had to be removed due to copyright, but Dylan’s banter before and after the song appeared is a lot of fun); “Kiss” in the “Kiss” episode; and “When Doves Cry” in the “More Birds” episode.
- Mavis Staples also appeared with Prince in the Graffiti Bridge film (her song on the soundtrack, “Melody Cool”, also appeared on The Voice album).
- (Not a direct Prince connection, but Mavis Staples is also on Los Lobos’ album The Ride mentioned above.)
- Mavis Staples and Prince remained very close even after this period of collaboration, and she essentially treated Prince as her son. (And, since Dylan had once proposed to Mavis Staples, if she hadn’t turned him down, in another timeline Dylan might’ve been Prince’s surrogate step-dad, lol…)
