  2. Comment:
"Happy no one lost their life or property, hassa sad because no more new rock or pretty lava."

    Response:
"Some of the lava fountains were quite spectacular. Sharing with you, a short video from Dec 1, 2022 of Mauna Loa's fissure 3."

  3. Question:
"Are Mauna Loa and Kilauea’s plumbing systems completely disconnected or are they joined at depth?"

    Answer:
"The compositions they erupt have subtle differences that indicate they come from different places in the mantle. So while they are part of the same overall hotspot system, they do not appear to be physically joined."

  4. "Is this a coincidence? Maybe. Maybe not. The volcanoes are not directly connected, but might "feel" one another via stress effects. Mauna Loa's eruption could have allowed Kīlauea to "relax." That said, Kīlauea's eruption was already pretty tenuous, occurring at very low rates."

  5. "Yes, you saw it right -- alert levels for BOTH Mauna Loa and Kīlauea were lowered this morning. Neither volcano is erupting right now, and gas emissions are at near-background levels, although HVO volcanologists remain vigilant for changes that might indicate renewed activity."

  7. Question:
"Was there inflation at the end of Mauna Loa's 1984 eruption or is this something new?"

    Answer:
"We don't really know. The low levels of inflation we are seeing now would not have been detectable by the techniques used to measure deformation in 1984. It's pretty small."

  8. Question:
"How close did it make it to Saddle road?"

    Answer:
"The closest lava reached is still about 1.7 mi from Saddle Road. The middle part of that flow is still hot and a bit higher in the middle than the edges. It will creep a bit closer as the hot insides push outward as the flow settles. Saddle Road is no longer in imminent danger."

USGS HVO reports that Mauna Loa continues to erupt but is no threat to the community. Fissure 3 lava flow rate is very low, and the flow front nearing Daniel K. Inouye Highway has stalled. (Good news for our Hawai'i Island community!)"

  11. Spotted yesterday at #MaunaLoa – a lava boat rides the waves! On Dec 7, a lava boat was spotted floating down channel. Lava boats can form when portions of the cone or lava channel break away & are rafted downstream. Hot lava cools to its surface to create that smooth exterior."

Look at the banks of the lava river, you can see some movement!

    Dec 8, 2022
    • Fissure 3 continues to erupt but supply of lava is reduced.
    • Lava flows extend no farther than 2.75 mi (4.4 km) from vent & channels below that point appear drained of lava.
    • Flow front stalled ~1.7 mi (2.8 km) from Hwy."

  14. Question:
    "How hot is that lava?"

    Answer:
"Basalt lava like this is usually between 1100 to 1250°C (2100-2280° F). In other words, about 4X as hot as the broiler in your oven!"

  15. Question:
    "It's buoyant because of vesiculation?"

    Answer:
"Probably! It's also difficult for cooled lava to sink into molten lava, since they're so close in density. Someone would have to shove it down, and we imagine no one would want to stand that close..."
