I agree #MattTaibbi is no saint and has changed a bit, but this episode is misleading re him and the Russia conspiracy. It wasn't about Russia fucking around in 2016 like all states do, but the claim that Trump was working with Putin to do whatever necessary (including break laws) to beat Hilary. And they used the claim to try to make it impossible for him to do anything in the first term. And saying that got you called names and dismissed. I can see how that broke Matt.

Apparently this book #Owned argues the tech billionaires indirectly bought #GlennGreenwald and #MattTaibbi. Maybe. I do think media ownership always influences the content. And also that creators come to recognize how to shape their content to get popular with different crowds. But #CitationsNeeded always claims that if you're not their version of left on an issue, something bad faith is going on. And none of these folks ever say this all demands media decentralization.

#MattTaibbi is taking a victory lap re the #Trump EO telling govt not to tell social media companies what speech to limit. I get the sentiment but this isn't a real solution. Some speech is illegal. Govts get to speak and companies can react however they want. They can limit speech in service of govt officials they like without request and only the size of their platform will determine the political impact.
