  1. Happy Heavenly Birthday, Matthew.

The world would be a better place with you in it. 💔

  2. #matthewshepard should still be here.
He lost his life due to a brutal, evil act of violence, just because he was #lgbttq2s .
May Matthew's legacy teach us kindness, acceptance, and to never tolerate hate.

  7. October 7, 1998 - Matthew Shepard, a gay student at the University of Wyoming, was beaten, robbed and left tied to a wooden fence post outside Laramie, Wyoming; he died five days later. His death helped awaken the nation to the persecution of homosexuals and their victimization as objects of hate crimes.

A play about the incident, and later an HBO movie, “The Laramie Project,” has been performed all over the country.

  8. #MatthewShepard had his life brutally taken, the result of a horrendous hate crime.

With #lgbttq2s rights in jeopardy in the US and beyond, we need to be extra mindful of Mathew's fate and ensure it never happens again.

  13. This reminds me of Melissa Etheridge's lines from her song "Scarecrow", dedicated to the murdered #MatthewShepard:

"We all gasp 'This can't happen here
    We're all much too civilized
    Where can these monsters hide?'
But they are knocking on our front door
    They're rocking in our cradles
    They're preaching in our churches
    And eating at our tables"

  14. The "land of the brave"'s privileged people making legislation against marginalized people because of "gay panic¹" and "phobia of trans people"—is this how self-proclaimed people look like? If you are so afraid of people who look, function, live and/or love like you, you behave more like what you describe as "unmanly".

¹ "gay panic defense": cheap "Get Out of Jail Free" card back in the day where homophobia wasn't a crime until the murder of #MatthewShepard

  15. Speaking about #MatthewShepard: Did you know, that Mariann Edgar Budde, the diocese's first female bishop, who made headlines for speaking at #DonaldTrump's inauguration, much to the president's dislike, presided over the interment of the ashes of Matthew Shepard, at the cathedral in 2018, together with Gene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop?

When Laramy, Wyoming, the home to #MatthewShepard, a young gay man, who has been killed by homophobes in 1998, aged 21, who have referred to the #GayPanicDefense in court, which could spare you prison for murder back in the day, who were found guilty for committing a hate crime, boos out their Republican representative #HarrietHageman at the town hall, there really has to be something wrong

  21. Bishop Budde made waves this week when she spoke directly to Trump during her Inauguration sermon.

She urged him to have mercy on those who fear for their lives under his administration.

She spoke of compassion for the LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities he seems intent on destroying.

He of course lashed out, demanding an apology and calling her names.

Make no mistake, what she did was an act of bravery. For a few minutes she had a considerable platform, and she used it to speak up for those who can’t speak up for themselves.

She stood up to the bully. She showed us all what it means to be an ally.

Did you know she also provided a final resting place for Matthew Shepard, who was murdered in a gay hate crime at the age of 21?

He was interred at the Washington National Cathedral in a service she presided over after having no permanent resting place for years due to concerns his grave would be vandalized.

Look for the helpers. They’re still out there. They may not be as loud as the bullies but they’re quietly working to protect as many people as possible. To share messages of love and inclusion. To build community. To stand up to hate.

"Matthew Shepard, the young gay man brutally killed on a chilly night in Wyoming 20 years ago this month, was finally laid to rest at Washington National Cathedral on Friday. A reflective, music-filled service offered stark contrast to the anti-gay protests that marred his funeral two decades ago.

The public remembrance at the filled 4,000-seat cathedral was led by the Right Rev. Mariann Edgar Budde, Episcopal bishop of Washington, and the Right Rev. Gene Robinson, the first openly gay man elected a bishop in the Episcopal Church. After, his ashes were interred at the cathedral's crypt in a private family ceremony."

Today we remember Matt by proudly supporting the Matthew Shepard Foundation in its mission to replace hate with understanding, compassion, and acceptance. 28. On the night of October 6, 1998, Matthew met Aaron McKinney and Russell Henderson at the Fireside Lounge in Laramie, Wyoming. McKinney and Henderson decided to give Shepard a ride home. They subsequently drove the car to a remote, rural area, and proceeded to rob, pistol-whip, and torture Shepard, tie him to a fence, and leave him to die–all because he was gay.
