  1. Why do so many Americans live in poverty? Because so many rich people benefit from it - sociologist Matthew Desmond

Desmond says that being poor is different in the US than in other rich countries. “We have so many resources. Our tolerance for poverty is very high, much higher than it is in other parts of the developed world’"

  7. #MatthewDesmond (Princeton University) in the #DailyShow:

You get the impression that #poverty is made and continued by design in the #USA. And there is almost no incentive for the #billionaires to end poverty at all, although they could very easily by just stopping #taxfraud or collecting the taxes that are already due today. 🤯

#Money flows to the super #rich (which pay less #taxes!) instead to the people in need.

    The #AmericanDream is an illusion.

What a shit country. What a shit system.

  8. Interesting segment in this #YouTube #video by #Bloomberg with #author #MatthewDesmond on his #book, #PovertyByAmerica.

Matthew reiterates salient points regarding #poverty existing in the #US because, collectively, we want it to exist, and #capitalism creates and depends upon it for its existence.

His phrase "#ChicNihilism" reminds me of the "#RadicalChic" of the same kinds of people in the 60's; ultimately a disengagement of the privileged.

    We can change #society.

  9. I just finished listening to Poverty By America by Matthew Desmond.

A damning explanation of how I benefit from the deep poverty of my fellow man.

  10. @kimlockhartga @bookstodon I am buried in hardcovers and my Kindle is stuffed. I just started Poverty, By America by Matthew Desmond last night. Gut punches. As good as Evicted which was excellent social justice writing. #PovertyByAmerica #MatthewDesmond

  11. #currentlyreading Matthew Desmond’s Poverty, by America.

for most of my followers this kind of stuff is “duh!” but it bears repeating:

“The passage of Prop 13 inspired a nationwide revo that led to Reagan's 1981 cutting spree. It was a white led revolt. … Massive tax cuts, which fundamentally reshaped the agendas of the nation's two major political parties and resulted in the rise of private fortunes alongside public poverty, were not simply a response to government overreach. They were a response to white people being ordered to share public goods with Black people.

The major accomplishments of the civil rights movement outlawed racial segregation in the public sector: … . En masse, whites responded to racial integration by withdrawing from public spaces, then from entire cities, taking their tax dollars with them. … in the wake of the civil rights era, most whites began voting according to their perceived racial interests rather than their economic ones.”

  12. A new look at #poverty and it is not nice!

“The new book by the sociologist and author of “Evicted” examines the persistence of want in the wealthy United States, finding that keeping some citizens poor serves the interests of many.”
