Books I Wish I’d Discovered Sooner
There are so many books I wish I had discovered earlier in life. Here are just a few:
The Hapiness Trap by Russ Harris
From a young age, we’re all led to believe in happily ever afters. We’ll grow up, get a job, meet a partner, have a kid and live happily until we’re dead, and when we don’t achieve or attain all of those things, we feel like failures. But what this book helped me learn is that happiness is not one attainable moment that lasts forever once you have it. It’s lots of little moments. What it helps to show is that a happy life is not measured as a lump sum of happiness. It’s measured by weighing the happy moments against the not-so-happy ones. If you have more happy than not, then you’ve had a happy life.Reasons to Stay Alive by Matt Haig
I’ve spoken about this book before. In it, Matt Haig talks about his depression and an attempt to take his own life, leading to his overall struggle (and lifelong battle) with depression and anxiety. As someone who has struggled with both my whole life, I often felt like an alien because, even though it’s illogical to think so, it feels like nobody else in the world could possibly understand what you’re going through. But this book spells it out in black and white. I’ve never felt such relief, knowing that other people are feeling and experiencing the same thing that made me feel so alone. And as I’ve said before, I highly recommend it.Save the Cat Writes a Novel by Jessica Brody
The original Save the Cat by screenwriter Blake Snyder was a how-to guide for writing screenplays, and that is invaluable in and of itself, but in Save the Cat Writes a Novel, Jessica Brody expands upon the information and funnels it towards novel writing. I learned so much about story structure and story beats from this one, so if you’re a writer, having this in your arsenal could only be a help.Well, this was post 29.

This stood out in my morning RSS browsing as a rather nice good news article.
I've enjoyed both fiction and non-fiction by Matt Haig (and he's a Sheffield lad like myself), and I was also lucky enough to grow up in the golden age of bookshops (i.e. before the internet). I spent ages in them in my teens and twenties; they were an escape from the unpleasantness of real life.
A new bookshop, especially one with such an enlightened brief (dogs are welcome, as are banned books; genre snobbery is not) is a wonderful event.

Saw #TheRadleys on the Now app, #movies part. It’s also on Sky #cinema and some theatres.
It’s pretty good, but I was expecting more and they left out a few things I thought were crucial, but I guess aren’t. The tone-setting was unnecessary for me, idk if it does it for anyone else.
I loved the #book, re-reading again after years.

Matt Haig's Midnight Library had so much potential but it obviously has been rushed to meet deadlines. If he was given the time and had a group of trusted people to bounce ideas with, Midnight Library could be timeless. 3/5
