  3. Can we please get rid of :// for denoting protocols? :blobfoxmeltsob: Like it's fine to still support it, but how come : doesn't suffice? I hate having three forward slashes when I'm accessing a remote or virtual filesystem.

I love you GNOME but admin:/// is a travesty. :soft_dab:

    EDIT: Actually, what about > ? :soft_thinking:

mostly because I like Matrix's @user:server.tld and matrix:@user:server.tld would like dumb but matrix>@user:server.tld would be pretty clutch

  6. @kaliwolf
    Hmm #MatrixChat🙄
Well when it comes to Matrix clients:
    I was rocking Nheko
    github.com/Nheko-Reborn/nheko/
up until they stopped making an appimage😠.
    I started using this SchildiChat
    github.com/SchildiChat/schildi
but now they have moved on to some other thing call "schildi-revenge" there is no appaimage or deb file.
So I'm stuck on old SchildiChat for my PC & it looks like they are keeping github.com/SchildiChat/Schildi still going.
Matrix Chat is kind of cool but needs shit-loads of work in my book.

  8. It was a long and complicated process, but I successfully set up video and voice calling on my Matrix server! 🎉

Unfortunately, it pails in comparison to the task of convincing literally any of my friends & family to get off Discord.

  9. For fellow admins and #selfhost crowd: Is illegal media spam in #matrix still a thing? I'm aware of changes from late 2024, but I'd like to hear your recent experiences. I'm looking to host small friends-only federated server, but I still haven't decided. 🤷

  10. Well, finally got a Matrix server up and running so our podcast community can flee Discord. Stress testing ongoing.

It's been a bumpy ride, but at least we own the car now.

  12. Hey lovely people, does one of you host their own Matrix server?

If so, what does your infrastructure look like?
What homeserver implementation and web client are you running?
    Any resources you can recommend?

    Context:
I'm looking to host a community of up to 300 people but I expect around 50 active users tops. I have no admin experience with Matrix. (VPS specs: 4 vCPUs, 8GB RAM, 256GB storage)

  14. I was thinking about spinning up a public Matrix instance as an alternative to Discord, but I think I'm just, like, not smart enough or patient enough to deal with a Matrix server that people other than myself are using. :blobcorgimeltsobbrokenheart: CubHub runs on, like, 90% audacity, but Mastodon isn't actually difficult software to run because of how well documented it is. Synapse is a nightmare to deal with and it has just purely awful documentation. :neodog_what:

I could try an alternative Matrix server but I dunno how well the Mautrix bridges work with that and if the documentation situation is better. :wlfThink:

  18. Y'know, I probably wouldn't be such a salty sailor about how disjointed Matrix is if they could just finalize a sticker spec. :corgi_wtf1: Like, yes, it is a very kludgy protocol with loads of issues, but I'd care a lot less if I could reliably have stickers across Matrix clients.

  20. I think Matrix still has my favorite decentralized service username schema. :blobfoxthinkanime:

@user:domain.tld makes a lot of intuitive sense to me and looks really clean. It's really clear which part is the username and which is the domain without looking repetitive. It starts with an @ so it tells clients to pull up the username lookup when you start typing, but it doesn't get kludgy like other username schemas do.

[email protected] makes sense for email I guess because you can't really @ people inline, but it doesn't work well for other services because it doesn't start with an @ so it doesn't indicate to the client to pull up the username lookup. I'm curious how XMPP handles this. :soft_thinking:

@[email protected] that Fedi uses looks awful to me. I hate the double @'s, it just doesn't scan very well and looks silly. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like my username is being flanked by boobies. :neodog_think_googly: (Technically Fedi uses WebFinger/the email schema under the hood from the last example and the double @'s are just user-facing in order to trigger the inline username lookup, but meh, I'm including it.)

@domain.tld that Bluesky uses seems clean on the surface, but then you realize your username is (usually) just a domain name which is... weird. :meowwaitwhat: Then you're stuck making a subdomain for your username if you couldn't get a dedicated domain for it, so then it becomes @user.domain.tld or even @user.subdomain.domain.tld which is just, like, idk a lot of dots. :soft_sweating: It makes sense for ATProto because of how the DIDs work, but it's still not my favorite.

I know I've made this ramble before but I'm like Fedi handles where I'm hopelessly repetitive :soft_dab:

  26. For shits and giggles in the process of self-hosting a #matrixchat server. For now it’s not federated and I can only reach it when I’m on my own network.

Admin user created, database is running.

    It’s fun to tinker. :-)

    Fight the #EU & it's Orwellian Law✊
People will install Custom #Android ROM's on their #SmartPhone's (Stops EU Scanning App) & people will use App's like:
    #SessionMessenger
    #SimpleXChat
    Maybe even #MatrixChat over #Tor or #I2P
Also EU people will turn to VPNs outside of the all seeing eye👁️ of the EU🇪🇺
The baddies will surely be doing all of that, so this law will stop nothing

  30. A couple of months ago I've read this Mastodon thread by someone (Terence Eden maybe?) that basically broke down why Matrix is pretty unusable in its current state, so bad that not even the Matrix organization (or some other organization related to Matrix) does not even use it for their internal communications... Something along those lines!

Does anyone know which thread I'm talking about? Can't find it right now 🤔

  32. I'm pouring out a drink for the administrators of the Matrix.org homeserver who are looking to be in for a rough night after major database corruption. Best of luck with the restore, it'll probably be their longest outage for many years.
This does highlight the issues with federated platforms where a large majority stay on one server. Had more people been encouraged to spread out onto other (unaffected) servers, the impact would be far less.

  34. Does anyone know why Matrix doesn't notify you when a picture message is received? It's super annoying. :corgi_wtf1: And I say Matrix instead of naming a client because every single client refuses to notify for it so I imagine it's something in the spec.

  36. One thing I don't like about #Signal is that it only supports one mobile device per account. I know they want to make it easy for the average user. But for someone who has two phones, it's very limiting.

That's why I prefer #Matrix. Adding another device and decrypting all existing messages doesn't even feel so clunky anymore.

    bild kann nicht geladen werden;
    schlüssel nicht verfügbar;
    app/server/raum/welt nicht kompatibel;

matrix ist so grossartig und fährt dennoch 3x im jahr gegen den baum. 😭

  39. @ppatel Thank you so much for your answer. I use several clients for the phone and the Linux desktop, and I like them. I didn't know they were not fully accessible, and I am sad about it. Accessibility should be a key aspect of the web and any open communication system.
