  4. Interestingly, one archival witness remembered Zinaida Mulchenko as a "PhD student from #Kyiv" – an unconfirmed but intriguing Ukrainian thread in the story of a scholar who helped shape global scientometrics.

  5. #Scientometrics is a direct translation of the Soviet term naukometriya, introduced through the 1969 monograph by Vasily Nalimov and Zinaida Mulchenko. A new paper in @QSS_ISSI reveals that around 15% of that monograph consists of fragments from Mulchenko’s PhD thesis on information flows in science — meaning that many core ideas of Soviet scientometrics were actually hers. Yet she almost disappeared from the historical record = #MatildaEffect

  6. Historian Margaret W. #Rossiter exposed the long-standing erasure of women scientists and named it the #MatildaEffect, after Matilda Joslyn #Gage. Through decades of research, she restored hundreds of women to the scientific record and reshaped how history is written.

    Sigh...

I wish, they would have included the fact that the first person to conclude that rising #CO2 levels would change atmospheric temperature and could affect climate was Eunice Newton Foote, a woman:

Bias against acknowledging the achievements of women scientists whose work is attributed to their male colleagues is called the #MatildaEffect

  13. “When I asked Rosemary why she left physics ..without completing her PhD ..her response was pragmatic. Living in a time of food rations, housing shortages and great sacrifice, and with no time-saving appliances or childcare for their three girls, she decided that it would be best for physics if Peter kept working. #matildaeffect: female scientists’ contributions are often overlooked or attributed to their male counterparts.

  14. In 1949, Rosemary Brown and collaborators published a series of papers which proved #ParityViolation and led to the discovery of kaons.

After marrying, she left physics to keep house. Her innovations and discoveries have sinve then tended to be attributed to her PhD advisor or her husband (who, to his credit, did properly cite Brown, but sexist society gonna sexist).
