The support for #MathML in browser is often poor. The fact that instead of improving it the developers seem to be instead pressuring the standard bodies to impoverish the language only makes this worse.

(I am aware of #MathJax. We shouldn't need a heavy-duty #JavaScript library to solve typesetting problems. That's exactly what browser engines are there fore.)

I weep for the status of scientific publishing in the modern world.

(This rant is offered by my experience looking for options to make the SPHERIC newsletter available both in PDF and in HTML form. I don't even need complex math usually,, we try to avoid it in contributions because it's hard to typeset math outside of the TeX world. But the fact that in 2026 online the only safe way seems to be to typeset everything manually or rely on huge JavaScript libraries is a little depressing.)

I am trying to find out what tools can I use to create math content. I know #mathml is supported accross variety of screen readers and browsers but that seems to be only one side of the puzzle and that is reading.
How do I as a student collaborate on math content with my teacher and the other way round, how do I as a teacher create accessible math assigments for my student allowing them to complete it with a screen reader?

For this answer let's explore that both student and teacher are blind or visually disabled or teacher is sighted, student is blind. How to collaborate?

@bkardell @koala with #mathml becoming reality, @typst offering a real alternative to (La)TeX typesetting, and character recognition becoming better and better (so you can just draw what you need), I wonder for how long people will still default to the TeX syntax when typing formulas. 🤔 That also means many don't need mathjax/katex anymore.

Does anybody have experience with Wordpress's "math block"? I can use LaTeX as input, but not MathML, even though it should be possible according to the site https://wordpress.org/documentation/article/math-block/.

LaTeX renders as math and MathML, but MathML doesn't get rendered.

Hatte vor einigen Wochen eine #MathML-Formel gebaut und davon ein Bild zum Einfügen in das Klausurblatt gespeichert. Heute beim Formulieren der Aufgaben gesehen, dass ein Teil der Formel (Zahl) nicht stimmig war.

Hätte peinlich werden können, wobei da vielleicht auch kaum jemand den gewählten Zusammenhang hinterfragen würde. ;)

@tonofcrates Thanks for this! My grasp of MathML and mathematical writing is better than HTML, so it may explain some of the confusion.

I tried to read into this a bit more. (This got a bit convoluted and ultimately I did the reading mostly for myself, so feel free to ignore this, if you have other more useful things to do!)

It is not really explained in that section why the list elements can't be children of <p> tags. (At least not in regards to the inline/block distinction.) It seems to me that the reason is that<ol> and <ul> are flow content and not phrasing content. Phrasing content is required inside <p> tags based on its content model.

On the other hand MathML math is phrasing content (but it is also flow content). This is why I would think that even having block-styled math should be allowed inside the <p> tags. Is there any other element that behaves in this way? That it can be either inline, inline-block or block element (by its 'nature' so to speak)?

Since this can't be separated from styling and CSS, I also looked into that.

With CSS you can have all sorts of combinations, but does it come down to inline/block distinction or the content model?

The CSS spec says that if a block box has another block box nested in it, the user agent(?) should only have block boxes inside the parent block box (https://drafts.csswg.org/css2/#anonymous-block-level). I don't see this as being a problem either, since <p> is a block box already. It seems that the user agent does the splitting into paragraphs by itself anyways.

Neil Soiffer und David Carlisle haben eine neue Website zum Testen von #OpenTypeMath-Schriftarten erstellt.

Sie ist hauptsächlich auf die #MathML Darstellung ausgerichtet, enthält aber auch Tests, die PDF-Dateien (auf texlive.net) generieren, die die #LuaLaTeX Darstellung der bereitgestellten Ausdrücke mit allen Schriftarten zeigen.

Hier stehen etwa 30 Schriftarten zur Verfügung, was wohl nahezu allen frei verfügbaren #OpenType #Mathematik #Schriftarten entspricht.
