Margaretha Geertruida Zelle nació el 7 de agosto de 1876 en Leeuwarden (Países Bajos), hija de Adam Zelle y Antje van der Meulen.
Su padre era sombrerero, modesto en recursos pero con grandes aspiraciones sociales, tanto que sus vecinos le apodaron “el Barón” por sus constantes delirios de grandeza y sus exageradas aspiraciones de prestigio.
Su madre, Antje, era una mujer elegante y de sangre más refinada, y de ella Margaretha heredó una belleza exótica que no pasaba desapercibida.

Desde muy chica la familia estaba marcada por tensiones económicas y personales.
Cuando Margaretha tenía 10 años su padre perdió una demanda comercial importante y luego falleció, lo que precipitó un empeoramiento de la situación familiar.
Su madre, antaño orgullosa, se encontró de pronto arrastrada por dificultades económicas.

Margaretha creció entre clases medias-bajas, pero siempre con una necesidad interior de destacar.
Fue enviada a escuelas privadas que, en teoría, estaban más allá de las posibilidades reales de su familia.
Su educación fue formal, pero también cargada de tensión: las contradicciones entre la modestia real y la imagen de grandeza que su familia quería proyectar dejaron huellas en su personalidad.

Un incidente clásico que siempre se menciona es el episodio de la carroza tirada por cabritas blancas: el primer día en uno de los colegios más caros de la ciudad, Margaretha hizo entrar a la escuela esa carroza adornada con cintas, un gesto teatral que dejó claro desde temprano que ella quería ocupar un lugar especial, aunque no fuera congruente con su realidad socioeconómica.

Más tarde ingresó al Instituto Leyden de Ámsterdam, una escuela prestigiosa para jóvenes de buena familia.
Ahí fue notada por su belleza exótica y su presencia magnética.
Dicen las crónicas de la época —aunque hay parte leyenda y parte testimonio— que el director del instituto se enamoró de ella cuando Margaretha tenía 16 años, una atracción tan intensa que derivó en su expulsión.
Lo que sí está documentado es que pronto dejó la escuela y se fue a vivir con un tío.

A los 19 años se casó con el Capitán Rudolf Mac Leod, oficial del ejército colonial neerlandés, con quien se trasladó a Java y Sumatra (actual Indonesia), provincias bajo dominio colonial neerlandés.
Ese matrimonio fue difícil: Mac Leod era alcohólico y violento, y Margaretha lo supo enfrentar desde temprano.
En el sudeste asiático aprendió danzas nativas balinesas, gestos sensuales y ritmos hipnóticos que marcarían su carrera posterior.
Su exposición a culturas exóticas y rituales la transformó: aprendió técnicas escénicas que después explotaría en los escenarios de Europa.

Tras cinco años de matrimonio —marcados por conflictos, distanciamiento y una sensación de encierro cultural y emocional— Margaretha decidió separarse de Mac Leod y regresar a Europa.
Su divorcio fue pronunciado, algo poco común en la época, y le permitió tomar control de su destino.
