What's bothering me about #mastodon is that it's apparently impossible to search for parts of a user's handle. Example (using a handle from the trending pages). I'd like to search for @ [email protected] but searching for "carve" will show me profiles of that exact name or containing it in their bios.
Searching for "carveher" will show NO results for profiles. It will, however, show me hashtags where "carveher" is a part of.
WHY DOESN'T IT WORK LIKE THAT FOR HANDLES?

Fetch the exact handler from:

or similarType into the search box:

Searching the GitHub repo for "search library" since 2022-1-1 finds no relevant hits: https://github.com/search?q=repo%3Amastodon%2Fmastodon+search+library+%3E2022-01-01&type=issues
There's also no mention in the official Mastodon docs that I can see:

I have to admit that I did not read the specifics about the then announced #mastosearch. Now that the #search feature is here, I am deeply disappointed, because of the fact that it's a local search feature. In fact, I think this could be even harmful for the development of a federated social network. The big instances will have one, and this could drive users to go there. #MatthewEffect, here we come.
I want opt-in #federatedSearch, I want to be able to look beyond my bubble.

Clicked the opt-in for the new #mastoSearch capability. It's apparently just coming online in revision 4.2 (in beta), so it might be a while for your instance if it updates slower than this big one under the gargronator.

There's a solution to get beyond the invisible walls. Imperfect but here we go:
Type this into the search box (without spaces)
@ tag-$tagname @ relay.fedi.buzz
E.g. using dnd as the tag name.
@tag-dndWorks fine
But it doesn't work for:
@tag-a5eLike gup.pe groups this is a discovery tool. It grabs info from "out of network" I.e. servers that no one is following.

I wouldn't mind (1) ability to privately search my timeline for public things I missed (I already save/sync my personal #Mastodon posts on my own blog) and (2) Jan's last points - #Fediverse will only get bigger and for it's protection and of it's users a system where we can experiment safely. Just like Twitter's early days folks will build tools and play. #mastosearch
