  1. Not sure what to make of Mastodon’s presence in the academia. Last week, we organized a conference in Munich attended by 5000+ scientists, WCCM-ECCOMAS 2026 (here, honorary chair Ekkehard Ramm addresses the opening audience of ca. 3000). There are hundreds of related posts on LinkedIn, but none, it seems, here. Beyond the official German university accounts dutifully posting once a day, I don’t see much Mastodon resonance among my colleagues, unfortunately.

  2. This exhibit from @KIT_Karlsruhe is an excellent reason to visit:

Maybe on my way back from Munich in May. CM-200 was the first really parallel computer I learned, after some limited experience with CRAY "microtasking". Our group got a very short sample structural mechanics code in CM Fortran from Zdenek Johan at TMC and that was enough to quickly port our finite element flow solver. Never since have I used parallel language so effective.

  3. I'm visiting University of Western Australia as Gledden Fellow for the first time. I must say that Perth and the UWA campus are just stunning!

  4. It's always fantastic to visit Prof. Kazuo Kashiyama's CMLab at Chuo University in central Tokyo. I visited over 10 times by now, and every time, it's a delightful experience. Here, we enjoyed demos of an upgraded VR Cave system. Also on the program, German-Japanese Workshop on Computational Mechanics, and Kenjiro Terada's 60th Birthday Colloquium. And on the lighter side, Tokyo Marathon (second time as participant) and World Baseball Classic.

  5. Don't we just love MS Outlook? Never mind that the message deceivingly invites you to switch to "new" Outlook, which apparently has fewer functions than the old one. I'm so happy to have to use this abomination only in order to remove attachments which Apple Mail is not able to remove.

  6. Nature magazine wants to leave Xitter for BlueSky and is asking for input.

In the thread below this toot, there is an un-paywalled link to the Nature Poll. Where it asks what you like about BkueSky, you can say you like mastodon :-)
And you can submit multiple times, apparently.

  7. Like every year since 2015, I spend part of my last days in the office working on the CATS institute report for the alumni and friends. It's a chance to review the year, and pick the most amazing stuff. This is probably the most fun thing I do at work!

  8. We now learned that our defense in August bore fruit and that the SFB Transregio 402 DediGrad is going to be funded starting in 2025 for the initial period of four years. The project is coordinated by the @tuchemnitz, and IKV, CATS, ANTS and WZL at RWTH Aachen are partners. The goal is to make plastics production processes more sustainable via a tailored use of reinforcement.

  9. Last week, visiting the Chemical and Biological Engineering department at the Seoul National University. Pictured here with students from Jaewook Nam's lab. We are working together on modeling and simulation of battery slurries and their processing.

  10. It was great to visit Austin again, for the 6th annual meeting of the International Research Training Group 2379 on Hybrid and Hierarchical Approaches in Modern Inverse Problems! The meeting took place at the Oden Institute at the University of Texas. The highlight of the non-scientific part was surely the canoe tour of the Lady Bird Lake, watching the bat extravaganza under the Congress Avenue bridge.

  11. The CRAY-2 sold for $176,400. I found the announcement of its installation in old MSC News, just around the time I got my first office in the MSC building.

  12. Removing Xcode Command Line Tools and reinstalling them from scratch (using downloaded package or Xcode itself) seems to fix the build problems.

  13. Knock on wood, but the Mac OS Sequoia (and other Apple software) migration seems to have gone well. The one problem are MacPorts, since one port that many others depend on (db48) fails to build.

This is an ex-Minnesota Supercomputer Center machine, very likely sc.msc.edu. First super I had access to, still as an undergrad. It was standing among giant Control Data and other monsters, quite small but much more powerful than any of them.

  15. With the help of Mac Color Classic and BlueSCSI, the 1988 sources of a truss editor could be revived and compiled in Think Lightspeed Pascal. This involved OCR of old printouts, lots of corrections, and using leftover resources from a much later (but incomplete) C++ version. TrussMe was my first Mac Toolbox GUI program, heavily inspired by MacPaint and MacDraw.

  16. At the World Congress on Computational Mechanics 2024 in Vancouver, we officially launched the preparations for the WCCM ECCOMAS 2026,, to be held in Munich, Germany on July 19-24, 2026. With Wolfgang Wall and Alexander Popp, we were happy to get a "lessons learned" primer from the Vancouver organizers, and we look forward to the next months! The congress web site will go live in the next few weeks.

  17. Recharging at a seemingly underutilized station just before NHR4CES team event at Maria Laach monastery. German EV infrastructure is a total mystery to me – not much near the highways, at least compared to the Netherlands, but then out-of-the-way places like this.

  20. My favorite editor, BBEdit 15, now comes with ChatGPT worksheet support. I will try to ignore that. The other changes – like the visual document overview in "Minimap" – are pretty nice!
