If Translate has to be installed (even with the extra effort of applying for API keys) and is only available to users logged in to that instance, but not to visitors, then I am not convinced that your original claim is true, which started this thread:

"AI is already installed into most of Mastodon via Translate".

Even if Translate is installed on your instance, do you propose that AI is doing anything on "most of #Mastodon", other than offering a translation?

Okay #MedMastodon folks - The instance is now back up and running I’m pleased to share. Things might take a moment to catch-up and I have sent out an announcement so hopefully anyone that had accounts that doesn’t see this will get the e-mail ping letting them know everything is currently back online.
I will post a bit more about the plan in the near future but the long story short is nothing is planned to change that folks will see, the main goal for me is to get the site up and running, catch up on the activities that look to be outstanding and get a plan together for migrating everything onto new infrastructure.

Also a huge shoutout to #mastohost who have been excellent at keeping the server “Paused” effectively without deleting data even when there was no confirmed migration path and a real big thanks to Nick for being willing to transfer the server and keep the community running!

new year update on what I'm using: #phanpy and #pl-fe as desktop clients, my own #fedicat and a bit of #IceCubes on iOS, hosting this and other official accounts on #mastohost, account on iosdev.space is super useful for ios dev, random posting on universeodon.com (basically where I started in the #fediverse, in retrospect I would have picked something with a shorter domain), love using #neodb and #bookwyrm, and thanks to all the admins out their hosting my test accounts!

I think Pelago hates the account now as it's not GTS anymore as I can't log in to verify everything.

Our new Mastodon instance isn't very federated yet. I considered adding a relay server but concluded that this would pull in so much content that I'd very quickly need to upgrade our #mastohost plan, which seems a bit silly this early on...

So now I'm considering setting up an account that just follows everybody in #trunk ( https://communitywiki.org/trunk ) minus a couple of questionable categories. Roughly looks like about 20k accounts... is this wise? 👀

Drinking mead... listening to Maeror Tri... like almost every day, except today I've also moved from my single-user masto.host server to oslo.town. I wasn't really planning to, but I just got tired of finding ways to free up disk space to keep my current subscription plan. Plus, being able to search looks nice. Last but not least, oslo.town has always seemed like a well-run server in the city where I live.

I'm on a small (3 person) Mastodon instance hosted on #MastoHost and I'm having trouble following PixelFed accounts. On my small instance I can neither follow pixelfed.social accounts nor the account of a friend who just stood up her own single user pixelfed instance.

I created a mastodon.social account for testing. There I can follow a pixelfed.social account, but not my friend's single user instance.

Is there something that I need to do to prime the proverbial federation pump?

Zdá se, že promazávání účtu nové místo v databázi nepřineslo. Je tedy možné, že už toho sleduji opravdu tolik (různé fedirelay mosty), že těch dat je prostě opravdu tolik. No co, tak si na #mastohost upgradnu plan z Moon na Planet a budu mít 5 GB databázi. Je to jen o $3/měsíčně dražší, #Mastodon za to stojí.

I don't think I've done an #Introduction here yet. Why? Largely because I didn't really think about it, but also because I really hate doing these sorts of thing. But hey, it's a good thing to do.

I moved over from @[email protected] as I was really frustrated with Mastodon, and more so that certain things with Mastodon are pretty hard to change (and not to my needs). I could have hosted my own instance, but I'd tried that, and ended up with it just not working out.

I run my main computers on #Linux, but I do "maintain" a couple of iPads, as it's nice to have something of the sort. I run various "net" stuff most of it various #Fediverse stuff (I'm not running my #Mastodon instance, I have #MastoHost for that). I've built a bunch of tools for myself, and most of them I have something about it over on my #Forgejo instance https://code.jigmedatse.com/

I try to run a weekly watch party on Tuesdays, watching Internet Archive films (mind you some of the stuff in my collection has come from other sources, it may happen that I have stuff that's not actually there occasionally).

I have chronic pain, and am autistic. Many days are just really rough. I post a daily "update" at the end of the day. Largely as a way to just say those things. Sometimes it's close to what the Mastodon limit was (500 characters), but most of the time it's over 1000, sometimes over 3000... I think once or twice it was over 6000.

The poll size was another thing with Mastodon that was a "practical reason" to move. I only had 4 options maximum there, and here (out of the box with Misskey/Sharkey) I have 10 options. I'm totally self hosting, so if I decide to change those limits... I can.

I guess that's about it. Maybe some people have things that I missed...

Alrighty, testing out this shiny new #gotosocial instance. For now, I've migrated by @afterdark account here and will be using this alongside my "main" @shellsharks account. I've heard great things about GTS and I've desperately wanted a fedi presence that has a text box that can handle more than 500 characters at a time. In time, if I find this to be a suitable alternative to my beloved Mastodon experience, I may migrate my main account here as well.

This may end up coinciding with my favorite fedi client, #Ivory's plan to support GTS in their next release.

And look at that, I'm already past 500 chars and I can just keep on typin'. Glorious. So continuing...

On Hosting

This instance is hosted by #knthost, who I've used to host my #castopod instance and have enjoyed their prompt and reliable service. They have a GTS offering (duh) which I would invite others to check out if they've been considering having their own li'l fedi home https://www.knthost.com/gotosocial. It starts at under $4/mo which is pretty stellar. How well that scales for larger accounts we'll see. But they make it pretty easy to scale up as needed and since I've been paying #mastohost 19/mo for a year now, I've got quite a bit of room to beef things up and still stay under what I've been paying. I still think #mastohost is great, and would highly recommend them for anyone who wants a vanilla masto experience with top notch support and stability 👍

Why GoToSocial?

Honestly, I had a lot of choices, I considered Akkoma+Mangane, Sharkey, Glitch Masto, and others... Maybe I'll end up at one of those some day. But for now, I wanted to try this first. GTS is very actively developed, seems to be very resource "mindful", has plenty of customizability and has fast became a go-to platform for small or single-user instances like this one.

Finally got my #mastohost instance* thingy sorted out.

I was hanging out on the Moon. Turns out it was time to upgrade and move to a Planet... since December! 🫣

I need to get better at consistently checking all* my emails. 😁 I got too many #email accounts and aliases. And I haven't even gotten around to using my own domain for emails yet.

After appeals M'host offered to help find a backup if our #modTeam agreed. Instead disagreement and evasion ensued

The issue preventing the feeds from refreshing last night and this morning have now been fixed. This was due to a bug in the update to Mastodon 4.1.5 yesterday and the awesome folks at @mastohost figured it out and got it patched this morning.

Seriously: who would want to host that stuff?! #Byoblu contents had been against #MastoHost terms of service from the beginning. #Messora plays the victim yet claims others' space. There is no right of platform, no #censorship. There is freedom of association, and the utmost part of the #fediverse decided not to federate them.
