Hi all! Looking for recommendations for which #Android #Mastodon app would be best for a beginner/non-tech savvy person. I’m helping a family member set up an account for the first time, I’m familiar with the iOS apps but they use android. I’m aware there are a lot available, so specifically looking for feedback re: which app(s) would be most user-friendly/least overwhelming for a first-timer. Ideas?

To get started, you MUST use tags liberally (and you can even follow them!) on every post until you find people to connect with. There is no global search like on Twitter/Eks.

I like toot.io but the 500 character limit is getting very tiresome because of the importance of hashtags. Anyone got suggestions for other instances that also don't have overly trigger happy moderators but do have a longer limit?

@drdrstrange I use them liberally and follow or mute many. I often use location hashtags if relevant because as far as I know there’s no way to add a location. I use some straightforward topic-related ones, then there are some punny ones that are popular on here (e.g. #LichenSubscribe, #BloomScrolling) I even ask people for hashtag suggestions if I’m not sure, because you can edit posts here. Good luck!

By the way, I do get suggestions in my app (Ivory) when I start typing them.

@drdrstrange Hashtags here are more for search than anything, think of them like tags. If you're looking for a topic go into search and search by hashtag. The platform doesn't autocomplete because there are no algorithms tracking hashtag use, etc.. A reminder you can also follow a hashtag here, so if you find a useful hashtag you follow it and add it to a list just like a followed user. Maybe others have something to add #HashTags #MastoHelper

@PartTime_Nerd no worries! And congrats on making the leap! Don't worry too much about the profile you aren't using. It won't get noticed much if you arent posting from it anyway. There are things you can do to fully migrate to the account you are using permanently and put the redirect the unused one but no biggie. Have any other questions? #MastoHelper

I'm Tom! I found it confusing at first, and I'm still learning new things, but really the basics are exactly that: basic (though it doesn't always feel that way when you haven't figured them out yet).

If you feel you might need a hand getting over the first couple of hurdles, I might be able to help. And if I can't, at least you've met someone who doesn't seem to have absorbed this stuff from the ether. Where I can't help you, I'm pretty certain I'll have someone nice in my network who can.

The best thing to do, if you can't find an answer to a question* you're looking for is to put it in a reply to this post.

*Preferably related to getting started on Mastodon, but I'll give anything a go.
