I just want to praise and thank @admin and the rest of the volunteers at https://typo.social for hosting one of the few Mastodon instances with more than 1,000 users and 100% up time.

(There are fewer than 150 of these large and stable servers, according to @TheKinrar’s tool: https://instances.social/list/advanced#lang=&allowed=&prohibited=&min-users=1001&max-users=)

Typo.social also has excellent security scores. A+ from https://cryptcheck.fr/help and B+ from https://observatory.mozilla.org/analyze/typo.social

Okay, so just saying theoretically you could use your Mastodon instance as free cloud storage for photos and Video. There's no way this would be ethical but it is probably possible #mastodonfeatures #Mastodon #mastodonservers

So, I've been thinking of setting up my own mastodon server. It would be for only me and a few close friends in the www.PotholeStudios.com gaming community.

However, I seem to be running into a few snags.

1. I only have access to Windows server. No Linux. As I have other server software for some games that only run on windows server.
(I have a 1U Rack Server in my home office with plenty of performance to spare, running windows server)

2. Everybody's favourite, Dynamic IP.
(Router does have the ability to use DynDNS and/or NO-IP)

3. I do have a domain name, but I'd probably have to use a subdomain such as social.potholestudios.com or mastodon.potholestudios.com so how would I link a subdomain like that to a server on a dynamic IP through GoDaddy using DynDNS or No-IP?

4. No money to buy another server or cloud storage.

5. Once had a Linux server. Debian 5 has put me off Linux for life. Never again.

So, the question is, is it possible to run a Mastodon server with these limitations?

@scottjenson I would say it’s highly subjective as to what constitutes a ”well run instance,” but there are plenty of lists out there for people to find servers with which they might self-identify.

#Mastodon does have a learning curve but it’s not insurmountable with a little patience.
