Facebook immediately jumps onto it's spot.

Einer der Dinge die mir bei Mastodon auch sehr gut gefallen ist, dass Menschen hier von ihren ganz normalen Alltagsherausforderungen erzählen.
Vom chronisch Kranken, aus der Werkstatt, Erlebnisse mit Kunden usw
Das fördert die Empathie ungemein.
Wir 'wissen' zwar, dass jeder sein Päckchen zu tragen hat, Details darüber zu lesen macht aber einen riesen Unterschied.

WELL.
We have a newly installed @linuxmint version on an old #EndoOf10 laptop.All user files have been moved across (will require some organisation still, and that alone will be a shock to a GenZ used to just dumping stuff on the cloud - honestly the desktop looked like my parents... 😱 ).
Most important programs are there (I had to explain difference between program and app along the way too).
And overall it's been a pretty positive learning experience for both of us. I have had to compromise on a few things and teenager has a few programs installed that I'd rather not - but let's see this as a gateway out of #BigTech if at all possible...
There will be a few more follow up points I suspect but thanks all for your friendly encouragement and helpful hints so far

I love the Fediverse!
I told a contact living in Finland via direct message that I was trying to buy a gift for my brother living in that country and there seemed no easy way to do that from Canada. This great girl found a store selling the product in the town my brother lives in, sent me the address and url of the store, the manager's name and email address and even gave advice on how to word my email to avoid my contact email going into their spam.
I know she is a very busy person with a lot of cares and responsibilities in her personal life, so her time is precious. She nonetheless told me to tell her if I had any trouble, saying she would phone the store for me and talk to them in Finnish! I won't mention her here so she doesn't get inundated with help requests. But she knows who she is.

It's interesting that the Mastodon translation feature actually can make you friends/followers.
Just noticed somebody who mainly speaks in another language is following me.
I guess that I at one point used the translation feature and then replied.
From the interaction this person liked me and followed or liked something and followed...
The software is great...it's just that we're facing a horde of trolls
