So I spent a lot of time writing a post...which I think was kinda irrelevant but I wrote it due to me being excited with a Mastodon feature.
This can be seen in this screenshot I'm adding here:
Not a complaint comment: It would make more sense to me if the Fedi users showing up were mutual follows...just saying! No judgement!

is there a way to filter only posts without a cw?

A feature missing in Mastodon is the ability to save drafts… is there a method for emulating them?
-
One Mastodon feature I’d like to see is a notification for when someone accepts your follow request.
I add people to lists right when I follow them. But if I request and they accept later, I’m not capable of remembering to go back add add them to lists. My ADHD brain fails me there.
Probably only an issue if you follow a million people. Still. I’d like to see that.
Anyone have a good workaround for this?

Group Pages are a Mastodon must have feature in order to encourage more Facebook users to move to Mastodon. The ability to form a private group for a club, some topic, or organization is valuable and essential.
It could be a minimal feature initially:
- Group Page Creation and Group Owner
- Group Page Private (initially)
- Member Invitation
- Member Posting
- Member Comment and Like of Another Member’s Post
- Post EditingI recently deleted my Facebook (FB) account due to FB policy changes, it’s clear allegiance to Trump and Musk, and to its AI insertions. FB privacy has always been a concern. I never liked FB but used it in one narrow case for a group access to a private Triathlon club page. I’ll miss that.
I would love to be able to encourage that group to move to Mastodon. But the Group feature needs to be added to do that.

Mastodon feature request: I would like to be able to have separate follow lists. Currently, I have my general follows in my "Home" list and my super follows in my "Notifications" list. I would like to add a number of other custom lists.

The top #MastodonFeature, which I hope the core development team realizes this year is reimplementation of automatic language detection and storing appropriate language coding into posts on the web client.
-
Idea for a #MastodonFeature: updated post notifications display as a diff, w/added text underlined & removed text in strikethrough.
Or maybe an #ElkZoneFeature ?
-
Since you can control whether edits will notify you, I think it would be pretty easy to create a new #MastodonFeature #Subscribed where the post keeps getting updated.
That way, the post keeps showing up in your notifications. Won't have to fight the feed wondering if it will show up to all the same people.
Bring the YouTubers vibe, smash that Like button, and subscribe.
Clients could make this a configurable option that breaks these off into its own column or keeps it the same, and they will appear as a regular post.

Today ( actually yesterday ) I learned that there is software that does what Mastodon does, but has more features.
It is called "CalKey" which is a fork of "MissKey". It is similar to Mastodon, but with more features.
Mastodon, MissKey, and CalKey all run on ActivityPub, the protocol that makes federation possible.
All 3 interoperate. For example, someone I talked to using Mastodon told me about CalKey.
Same content, just different ways of getting there. Like using a different car to drive on the same roads, getting the same content.
Supposedly ( I haven't tried it ), CalKey has an easier and more advanced migration tool. Something to think about when the next Mastodon server ceases to exist or you don't care for mastodon.social and other servers embracing Threads.

Do filters I set work for content I view through #Explore ?
It does not seem like it does.

>move instance
The tools to do that aren't here.
The best you can do is an incomplete process that leaves portions of your account behind and a complicated process you have to do manually.

If I post on Facebook I don't want, I don't expect, my post to appear on Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube. If I post on Mastodon I don't want my content to go to Kbin, Lemmy, Threads (Meta's decentralized app), or a site/app I never heard of. I don't want my content going someplace that I did not *choose* as a destination.
I've gotten a number of federation fan boys lecturing me that is what the decentralization is all about.
Decentralization has been sold as a protective move against corporate abuse. Preventing another Elon Musk and protecting people from anti-user pro-profit policies.
Mastodon and open source are supposed to be about respecting users.
I think it should be a user's choice where her/his content ends up. I think it should be in their power to make that choice easily without having to rely on the good will of an Instance Admin.
I think each Toot & Reply should have the following visibility options.
1. Public - Everywhere
2. Private ( only @ tagged people )
3. Mastodon ( everywhere on Mastodon, only )
4. Local ( only on the local server of the user )Plus a Preference for the user to pick his/her default visibility level.

Imagine starting a post, and then checking a box:
This is a thread: ☑️
Then you write out the multiple posts in the thread and submit them.
Then someone comes along and wants to view your thread.
There is a button that says: [View as eBook]
You press it and a Modal window pops up, where your thread appears as flippable pages.
I can see this happening in the future, and I can see a huge boost for any platform that adopts it.
-
So you could theoretically fake a "make this post visible to list" by listing in the post all the accounts on a list and then making that post Mentions only.
A client (like @ivory) could even implement this function and also hide/windowshade lists of users at the top or bottom of a post.
-
@Gargron I’m sure this has already been requested tons, but I figured I’d try….
Are we able to get trending posts, tags, and links based on our servers federated posts and users?
I’m running a small server myself and am missing the value I saw with the trending section to help build my network.
-
Idea for a #MastodonFeature or #MastodonBot: you tag the account and it translates weird #Unicode “fonts” into regular characters for #ScreenReaders.
These types of things usually can’t be read by screen readers:
𝒮𝒾𝓁𝓁𝓎
𝕊𝕚𝕝𝕝𝕪
Silly
𝗦𝗶𝗹𝗹𝘆
𝘚𝘪𝘭𝘭𝘺
𝙎𝙞𝙡𝙡𝙮

I don't know if it is a new #MastodonFeature or not, but I LOVE that the new notification bell fills in instead of just darkens when you click on it. Such a simple thing, but I have clicked the old notification bell on and off SO MANY times because I couldn't tell if it was enabled by such a small indicator. Now, it is finally clear. Thank you @Gargron and the whichever #MastodonDeveloper implemented this change.
-
@Gargron another #MastodonFeature that would be nice to have would be the ability to translate Mastodon profiles. I LOVE the ability to translate individual posts. It is easy and works really well. However, profile information is still lost to me.

Some ideas about tags on Mastodon:
- I love following tags, but they can get a little confusing too as sometimes I'm not sure why a message appears in my timeline. Highlighting followed tags in these messages in some way could remind me why I see them?
- The /following page could add a toggle to show/manage all followed tags. -
#MastodonFeature ideas:
* hovering on a hashtag, or selecting a word and right-clicking, to get a context menu for muting/filtering based on that word/hashtag.
* time-bound filters. There are some things I'm temporarily overwhelmed hearing about, but I know I'll be fine again in a few weeks. It'd be awesome if a filter could be auto-deleted the way a post can.
(If I had any Ruby or JS skill I might try to help, but alas, I'm a Python/Java backend-only dev.)

Feature request: an automated function that posts daily (or weekly) how many times I started a Toot but then decided not to click "Publish"
Call it "Better-Judgment-O-Meter", e.g.:
"Today, @rcameronthomas refrained from tooting 14 times! #BetterJudgment"
