My current #MastodonDotSocial follow request accept/reject rules make me feel a little bad, because I know there are some awesome people there, but whoever is running it (or maybe just whoever manages the app) seems to be doing some shady shit that is not good for the #fediverse. This has entirely to do with @Gargron and @Mastodon complete and utter inability to detect, control, and eliminate "verification" spam account activity on their own flagship instance
I"ve reported over 100 accounts at least in the last two days -- although I didn't think I'd really need to keep accurate count
The most recent reports were for activity only two hours old

What israel is perpetrating in Palestine is *a* holocaust, not *the* Holocaust. And yes, it is genocide. And yes, they’re also guilty of close to eight decades of apartheid, ethnic cleansing, and settler colonialism. All these things can be (and are) true at the same time.
Basically, if you’re defending israel in any way, shape, or form right now, you’re the worst of the worst. Almost a century ago, you’re the kind of person who would have been cheering on Hitler. And yes, that’s also a valid comparison.

Dot social makes it way too easy for abusive cowardly Fediverse users to create an alt to harass vulnerable people. Open registrations are an awful idea except for "growth".
The fedi is designed to never have the problem that #Brazil is dealing with. Each server might have users that a government has a problem with and chooses to block, but then users can move and keep their connections. No corporate owner can fuck you. That's not really true with #bluesky or #threads yet, if it ever will be. Here we do have to worry about #mastodon and #MastodonDotSocial (or any other server/app) eventually fully dominating the #SocialWeb. But we all care deeply about that.

FWIW, this is not the first time - by any means - that I have heard of exactly this sort of questionable "moderation" by some individual or individuals at #MastodondotSocial
It's almost as if Mastodon dot Social has grown so big no one is minding the store
Or, of course, unless this politicized moderation has tacit approval from the highest levels of the MastSoc administration
This never happens with centralised social media. If it doesn't work, it doesn't work, there's no alternative instance you can use.
A mastodon(dot)social database outage at Hetzner in Germany is actually a good point in favour of decentralised social media and for the Fediverse at large.

I'm considering blocking the `mastodon.social` instance *eventually*.
No judgement or shaming. You're an adult; the discourse is hard to miss; you've been making informed decisions all along if you're even on the Fedi. If you're considering relocating instances, take this is a gentle nudge to take that leap. I just did it (again) and it isn't too bad.
Please consider migrating to a smaller instance if that would work for you. Ideally one that isn't carrying water for Facebook, but I understand why you might want that reach & access.
You don't owe me anything, and I believe a lot of you were folks who followed me back in the first place. But hopefully this post illustrates the problem with enormously centralized instances on the Fedi. I would have already blocked the `mastodon.social` domain for self-care reasons were it not cutting me off from a diverse set of mutuals (about 30 people).

Why does searching for lemmy content on mastodon.social, such as a search for `@lemmy` or `@liaizon/110530316373516739`, produce zero results? Some of the content is accessible through this instance, e.g. https://mastodon.social/@liaizon@wake.st/110530316373516739, it's just not findable with search, and some of it redirects when accessed in that way.
