Rant: The linking of accounts without the @ instance dot tld is not really working. Not on Mastodon & not on Pixelfed. If you are on instance A & link a user foo from instance A without instance, a user from instance B will only see user foo from instance B not A or a 404. Depending if user foo exists on B.
between #Pixelfed and #Mastodon the linking is sometimes not even working with the full account handle.
I really hope that gets fixed at some point.

because QTs are embedded cards i cannot, to this day, understand why @MastodonEngineering will not adopt the format.

a QT acts as a blockquote and citation.

when was the last time you had to ask permission from a source to quote them in an academic paper or newspaper article?

when was the last time you had to ask Donald Trump permission to quote every public jettison of his verborrhea?

so why exactly are #MastodonDevs subverting one of the most basic principles of freedom of the press? 🧵

Here's a curious #Mastodon quirk.
It won't translate Spanish (see error message) but it's fine with other languages (e.g. Japanese).

this is wild. i am indeed getting two profile pages for Kim.

if i go to her page directly via the web, her pinned post is from July. if i do it via the #android or logged-in #web apps, her pinned is from January.

so this looks like a caching conflict? is it my app’s cache?

i cannot get to any of Kim’s current posts via the android app. i have to go to her page via the webapp but UNLOGGED. if i login, i can’t get to any of her current posts.

i know dealing with languages is such a mess because it’s tethered to localization ―which is, in my not-so-humble opinion, one of the biggest mistakes of software and web development.

YET! i would be forever grateful if there were a way to pick all the languages one writes in, so they are the only ones that appear in the globe.

this may not be possible without completely untethering languages from locale; but if you need this rubber-duckied, hit me up.

an entire column of dead unusable space because you need a whole column for the new toot text box instead of a floating "new toot" button that can then expand out on top 😒 on my 15" laptop this single useless column is taking up 25% of my screen!

also i cannot see the whole handle for this spam account and i won't click on their name. last time i did that, Mastodon.social treated it as an approval of the messages and had to block the accounts.

Mastodon Devs: 3 things are turning away millions of people. Do you have any plans to fix these?
1. Having to pick a server when you sign up
2. Have to copy & paste links to other servers because of awkward federation implementation
3. No quote tweets. Why is this such an issue?

Mastodon will never take off with the general public until these are fixed. That sucks because open source social media is the future we need #metacommentary #mastodon #mastodondevs

when Twitter was Twitter, we could do that and it validated the consent of mutual follows. they are a form of relationship curation, why can't i do that on this platform?

PS TO EVERYBODY ELSE: if Mastodon won't do this, which other platform does? Friendica? if am going to have to run my own AP platform, not being able to block DMs is a deal breaker.

#MastodonDevs why do toots start with a capital letter, but replies start with a lowercase letter?

An even more easy way to detect a likely #botFarm abuser, is if they have only been on fedi since around #nov22 and attract hundreds or thousands of likes and boosts.

On fedi that is really not natural.

We do hate that we must say this but the fact is #Mastodon and #MastodonDevs really let the ball slip when they implemented a bunch of #antiFeatures that fediverse was intended never to have.

Do not #Copyleft licences, like #GPLv3, work by ensuring that **any** software that includes the FOSS code be #FOSS also?

What the above describes is #softwareTheft, right?

For example #MastodonDevs by allowing #HellaDoge to not provide source code for years, with a notification of such by us, are allowing software #theft, right?

Re #hashtags. We have a pinned toot about it, it's that important.

On fedi, use #milkshakeDuck, not simply 'milkshake duck'.

In addition to being able to import toots, there *does* need to be a way to do #booleanSearch for #hashtags.

eg. Either/or: #icecream #icecreme #gelato #gelati
Addition: #icecream #icecreme +#fediArt
Subtraction: #btc -#nft

It seems #MastodonDevs are more interested in shadowban functions and #antiFeatures like the #botFarmTimeline, tho.

it's my first month on #Mastodon.

and i can't believe i just didn't straight up come here after i was banned for calling Amy Barnett Corbet a christofascist handmaiden ^^in 2020. this has been the most organic transition i have had using/adopting a new social media platform.

kudos to the #MastodonDevs but also to ya'll, here on MastonSocial and the #fediverse, who are committed to the open and federate internet.

this is better than nothing.

i can see now that i boosted Hourly Otters to the left; and not Hacker News on the right.

i hate this fix.

javascript has made the mobile web possible; hiding the browser behind "apps" and getting rid of the headaches of compatibility.

but it's created legions of developers who aren't interested in making "disability first" user interfaces. that would mean more CSS to work around the JS.

as FLOSS, #MastodonDevs needs to do better. here's a suggestion:

am looking at the codebase. i scoured the documentation.

maybe it's my dyslexia but... am i correct in saying that mastodon doesn't have a templating engine to manage theming and design?

am i getting this right? they hard code the UI??!?!

cuz this is blowing my mind. no wonder most instances look the same

am not even clear why they can't. is there a thread or blogpost #MastodonDevs explain why it can't be done?

this is the kind of toot perfect for a quote. why?

1. it's posted by a bot. there's nobody to reply to.

2. the point of quoting is so people can read the whole post; including any images or "title cards" from embedded links

3. it's faster and easier than a screenshot.

what's holding #Mastodon back?

"People are going to steal music so we might as well make it easier for them to do that. It's a selling point." - #Mastodon CEO. This is not very artist-friendly.

I found out today that audio uploads have a download button that cannot be disabled, and after a google search, found that the reason for it is what the message in the screenshot says - people will steal music, so why not make it easier for them.

Having a download button gives the perception of it being free/given away, whereas NOT having a download button doesn't implicitly diminish the value of what is being shared, which is important if musicians are trying to make sales to try to make a living. We don't all just give our music away because *some* people are bad actors and steal it. That makes no sense.

It really is a shame because the built in audio player is really well-designed and would make sharing music here easier. Until then, I'll have to use a competitor's site anyway to share music.
