#mastodondevs — Public Fediverse posts

Before I write a bug report: (if there isn't already one)

Does anyone know, why the Mastodon counting is so strange?

e.g. for #dietotenhosen
https://mastodon.social/tags/dietotenhosen

It shows 3 posts on the numbers

But if you scroll down there are a lot more posts with the hashtag

...or did starter packs ship and I'm in one? Official blog said it's called "collections" and will target 4.6, which .social is running nightly

Rant: The linking of accounts without the @ instance dot tld is not really working. Not on Mastodon & not on Pixelfed. If you are on instance A & link a user foo from instance A without instance, a user from instance B will only see user foo from instance B not A or a 404. Depending if user foo exists on B.
between #Pixelfed and #Mastodon the linking is sometimes not even working with the full account handle.
I really hope that gets fixed at some point.

because QTs are embedded cards i cannot, to this day, understand why @MastodonEngineering will not adopt the format.

a QT acts as a blockquote and citation.

when was the last time you had to ask permission from a source to quote them in an academic paper or newspaper article?

when was the last time you had to ask Donald Trump permission to quote every public jettison of his verborrhea?

so why exactly are #MastodonDevs subverting one of the most basic principles of freedom of the press? 🧵

@Mastodon & #MastodonDevs Mastodon iOS app is breaking into a ghosting mess. Yeah, I reported it elsewhere.

18.7.1 = timeline kerfuffle x3. Click on anything and everything disappears when you go back. Here's a vid.

I still love ya, for what it's worth. 🤓💙😘

And yeah, I also have an Android. And a Mac. And like four Linux computers. But I like the computerized, glowing, time-wasting Apple 🍏 in my pocket to work. XO 💋

#MastodonBugs #MastodonApp

Here's a curious #Mastodon quirk.
It won't translate Spanish (see error message) but it's fine with other languages (e.g. Japanese).
#admin #MastodonAdmin #devs #MastodonDevs

this is wild. i am indeed getting two profile pages for Kim.

if i go to her page directly via the web, her pinned post is from July. if i do it via the #android or logged-in #web apps, her pinned is from January.

so this looks like a caching conflict? is it my app’s cache?

i cannot get to any of Kim’s current posts via the android app. i have to go to her page via the webapp but UNLOGGED. if i login, i can’t get to any of her current posts.

DEAR #MastodonDevs

i know dealing with languages is such a mess because it’s tethered to localization ―which is, in my not-so-humble opinion, one of the biggest mistakes of software and web development.

YET! i would be forever grateful if there were a way to pick all the languages one writes in, so they are the only ones that appear in the globe.

this may not be possible without completely untethering languages from locale; but if you need this rubber-duckied, hit me up.

love,
liza

#mastodondevs #mastodon what is wrong with this picture...
an entire column of dead unusable space because you need a whole column for the new toot text box instead of a floating "new toot" button that can then expand out on top 😒 on my 15" laptop this single useless column is taking up 25% of my screen!

my lovely #MastodonDevs

could you please not include boosted posts in the “Posts & Replies” section of the #Android app, so we can find what we actually posted recently?

y’all fixed that on the deck interface. please now make it so for the mobile app?

btw: i haven’t updated my sign in credentials at github, so i can’t drop you a note at the moment.

thanks!

ps: seriously, boosts should be a separate category of post.

WTAF!
if you delete the spam DM notification on the #MastodonApp it doesn't NOT delete them on the Mastodon.social deck?

also i cannot see the whole handle for this spam account and i won't click on their name. last time i did that, Mastodon.social treated it as an approval of the messages and had to block the accounts.

why #MastodonDevs, why?!?!

WTF #MastodonDevs?!?

Mastodon Devs: 3 things are turning away millions of people. Do you have any plans to fix these?
1. Having to pick a server when you sign up
2. Have to copy & paste links to other servers because of awkward federation implementation
3. No quote tweets. Why is this such an issue?

Mastodon will never take off with the general public until these are fixed. That sucks because open source social media is the future we need #metacommentary #mastodon #mastodondevs

Dear #MastodonDevs,
please, give us a short and curt BLOCK PRIVATE MESSAGES FROM PEOPLE YOU DON'T FOLLOW.

when Twitter was Twitter, we could do that and it validated the consent of mutual follows. they are a form of relationship curation, why can't i do that on this platform?

thanks.

PS TO EVERYBODY ELSE: if Mastodon won't do this, which other platform does? Friendica? if am going to have to run my own AP platform, not being able to block DMs is a deal breaker.

I'm excited about these new additions to #Mastodon on #Android and can't wait for them to be on #iOS and #Web!

To build the #Fediverse into a safe place where everyone feels welcome, we must treat others with curiosity and kindness — even when we feel their behavior goes against norms here! Or we risk corroding this place from the inside out.

Take a deep breath and #BeKind before you reply. :)

#Kudos to @Gargron @renchap and all #MastodonDevs @MastodonEngineering

#MastodonDevs why do toots start with a capital letter, but replies start with a lowercase letter?

An even more easy way to detect a likely #botFarm abuser, is if they have only been on fedi since around #nov22 and attract hundreds or thousands of likes and boosts.

On fedi that is really not natural.

We do hate that we must say this but the fact is #Mastodon and #MastodonDevs really let the ball slip when they implemented a bunch of #antiFeatures that fediverse was intended never to have.

#theNov22s

@mjg59 @jenniferplusplus @blogdiva
Do not #Copyleft licences, like #GPLv3, work by ensuring that **any** software that includes the FOSS code be #FOSS also?

What the above describes is #softwareTheft, right?

For example #MastodonDevs by allowing #HellaDoge to not provide source code for years, with a notification of such by us, are allowing software #theft, right?

#AGPLv3Compliance

@LionsPhil @nicuveo
Re #hashtags. We have a pinned toot about it, it's that important.

On fedi, use #milkshakeDuck, not simply 'milkshake duck'.

In addition to being able to import toots, there *does* need to be a way to do #booleanSearch for #hashtags.

eg. Either/or: #icecream #icecreme #gelato #gelati
Addition: #icecream #icecreme +#fediArt
Subtraction: #btc -#nft

It seems #MastodonDevs are more interested in shadowban functions and #antiFeatures like the #botFarmTimeline, tho.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY!

it's my first month on #Mastodon.

and i can't believe i just didn't straight up come here after i was banned for calling Amy Barnett Corbet a christofascist handmaiden ^^in 2020. this has been the most organic transition i have had using/adopting a new social media platform.

kudos to the #MastodonDevs but also to ya'll, here on MastonSocial and the #fediverse, who are committed to the open and federate internet.

am so happy to the here

SUGGESTION FOR #MastodonDevs

it's really simple and you gonna hate it; because this is the bane of all devs.

but y'all aren't just any devs, you're FLOSSers; so...

🗣️ 📣 COMMENT YOUR CODE

that's it.

my dyslexia made me learn web design. do you know how we learned it back in the 90s & aughts?

"View Page Source".

now y'all have fancy githubs and such.

so please, at GITHUB, comment your code. EXTENSIVELY. especially all the UI stuff. betcha y'all see a bump crop of volunteers.

2/2

this is better than nothing.

i can see now that i boosted Hourly Otters to the left; and not Hacker News on the right.

i hate this fix.

javascript has made the mobile web possible; hiding the browser behind "apps" and getting rid of the headaches of compatibility.

but it's created legions of developers who aren't interested in making "disability first" user interfaces. that would mean more CSS to work around the JS.

as FLOSS, #MastodonDevs needs to do better. here's a suggestion:

QUESTION for #MastodonDevs or #MastodonAdmins

am looking at the codebase. i scoured the documentation.

maybe it's my dyslexia but... am i correct in saying that mastodon doesn't have a templating engine to manage theming and design?

am i getting this right? they hard code the UI??!?!

cuz this is blowing my mind. no wonder most instances look the same

amma mark everytime i #NeedAQuoteToot until @MastodonEngineering does good on us.

am not even clear why they can't. is there a thread or blogpost #MastodonDevs explain why it can't be done?

this is the kind of toot perfect for a quote. why?

1. it's posted by a bot. there's nobody to reply to.

2. the point of quoting is so people can read the whole post; including any images or "title cards" from embedded links

3. it's faster and easier than a screenshot.

what's holding #Mastodon back?

Ok. So, I've been followed by the same account at least three times. What explains this??

Unfortunately, Mastodon doesn't seem to record this activity for me. My notifications only show the latest follow.

Repeatedly getting notifications about one account following you is annoying behavior and degrades the usefulness of that entire category of notifications. It would be better to have a record to prove that this is happening.

Hello all, got a few bits of feedback for #mastodon any #devs #dev interested? #mastodev #mastodevs #mastodondevelopment #MastodonDevelopers #MastodonDeveloper #mastodondev #mastodondevs

"People are going to steal music so we might as well make it easier for them to do that. It's a selling point." - #Mastodon CEO. This is not very artist-friendly.

I found out today that audio uploads have a download button that cannot be disabled, and after a google search, found that the reason for it is what the message in the screenshot says - people will steal music, so why not make it easier for them.

Having a download button gives the perception of it being free/given away, whereas NOT having a download button doesn't implicitly diminish the value of what is being shared, which is important if musicians are trying to make sales to try to make a living. We don't all just give our music away because *some* people are bad actors and steal it. That makes no sense.

It really is a shame because the built in audio player is really well-designed and would make sharing music here easier. Until then, I'll have to use a competitor's site anyway to share music.

#MastodonDevs and those utilizing the #MastodonAPI - this is a very helpful guide from the official @Mastodon API docs.

#TIL there are css classes applied to any urls included in a status that will allow you to shorten its display in a post.

And - an explanation of filters! Concise, but helpful (wish I had this info a few weeks ago).

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/api/guidelines/

#mastodondevs what learning resource for #Rust, do you recommend?

#mastodondevs ¿Cuál consideran que es el mejor recurso para aprender #Rust? Los leo

#TIL that when you pull down #MastodonAPI timeline feeds you (obviously) have to create the content warning and sensitive post filters into your UI design.

But I didn’t… 😳 😱

Pearls have been clutched, eyes have been averted and cheeks have been blushed.

The things #MastodonDevs do for y'all.

#mastodon edit on iOs? good job #mastodondevs. and cheers!

edit: but can't edit image ALT text it seems

Hello #MastodonDevs , I have a question about the 500 characters limit for account's note in the #MastodonAPI : is this related to the instance.configuration.statuses.max_characters setting , or is this a fixed value that will never change ? thanks :)

@ksawatsky @briankrebs @Mastodon #MastodonDevs, this is objectively terrible #UX

@dsfgs

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected]

Yeah, there's a reason why I:
1) never use the "official" app
2) never recommend the "official" app
3) never refer to the "official" app
4) never assent to the idea that there could ever be one app that's "official."

Because it's kinda off. It's kind of a cultural half-breed.

@RL_Dane
The #ExploreTab is indeed one of the most toxic #MastodonRegressions that #MastodonDevs have introduced. Also forced javascript. We can see the bots are pumping the #turderatti with instant "#fame".

Interestingly, ninety percent of people complaining about #techLayoffs at the #dotCons were in that joining-window also.

Wie ist eigentlich so der Relese Cycle für #Mastodon? Da sind ja seit 4.0.2 etliche neue Features und Bugfixes erfolgt mittlerweile. #MastodonDevs #MastodonInstances

#MastodonDevs I found an interesting set of endpoints in the #MastodonAPI. I don't see a single app utilizing it!

Featured/Endorsed Accounts

This allows a user to pin other ACCOUNTS to theirs. Just like with lists, you have to be following them. Assume it would appear in the Profile.

Used the API to "endorse" a couple of my alternate accounts. A way to verify identity or personal relationships, I guess. Anyone have history on these and why they aren't used?

https://docs.joinmastodon.org/methods/accounts/#pin

Can anyone recommend some good reading on the reasons why #search in #Mastodon is less effective, less able to "see through" all the activity on different instances? Is that an inherent issue with its decentralized nature or is there hope it might improve? #discovery is just harder here, which I imagine will be a problem for all the #journalists joining the platform who used Twitter to find news as it happens. TIA! 👍
