Hm, an interesting update in the upcoming 4.3 version of Mastodon is that the site now defaults to automatic dark/light theme. This is a good thing, for sure!

But I just saw my profile page while logged out and I am really not used to seeing the light theme.

Mastodon experts: what's the rationale behind needing to follow an account in order to add it to a list? My home feed is getting crowded.

My only quibble with Mastodon is that you have to follow accounts in order to add them to lists. On the bird site I could create lists for say world news, add accounts, and be able to quickly switch between my regular feed of people I follow and news accounts without one muddying up the other.

I don't want news in my home or local feeds, just when I feel like looking at that type of content.

@siderea I think what can be done locally would be a good start to reducing things like "don't show me the same boost more than once".

I'm certain that the extent of what can be done locally with reasonable cache sizes is a meaningful change to what we would see for anyone whose followings have more than a couple hundred posts + boosts in a day.

And the complexity escalates exponentially if we need to carefully manage local cache sizes to support even simple models. Probably the most that's feasible (while still complex) would be thresholds or weighting for "number of posts + boosts to see from each follow" combined with "rank by reaction velocity since posting" — which allows a client to recognize that it needs to request more from the server to fill that queue. But again, you can see how for more than a couple hundred follows, this rapidly hits gigabytes of local caching and requires list preparation ON the server.

For comparison: few would consider Netflix recommendations to be toxic — and yet the list of rows and each horizontal row of movies must be prepared and cached on Netflix servers ready for a client to request it. That's on the order of 10k titles, each with a short list of tags — much less data than Mastodon handles.

Does that give you an idea of the technical challenges?

2021 was a year defined by deviations from established routines. And I do not mean the ongoing pandemic, though that, too. For the first time since I started working on Mastodon from the bedroom in my parent’s apartment in 2016, during my last year of university, we have introduced a clear separation between me as a natural person and Mastodon as a legal and fiscal entity.

More people have worked on Mastodon on an official basis this year than any of the previous years combined. For the first time we have invested a major chunk of our budget into design and user experience instead of code. And for the first time we have focused so heavily on something that wasn’t the Mastodon backend–our first official iOS app.

Ich muss sagen, das neue #Mastodon Design (Web) ist auf Smartphones nicht gut.
Oben nimmt mir die Leiste mit dem Button "Veröffentlichen" viel Platz weg und der Button lenkt den Blick andauernd ab.
Rechts die Toolbar nimmt auch viel Platz weg, und das bei der schmalen Breite.
Schön wäre es, wenn dieses Design optional wäre. Oder besser für Smartphones angepasst.

Wouldn't it be great if you could view your list of followed hashtags and turn them on and off based on how full your Home timeline is and how much time you have at the moment?
