Mastodon friends, I just realised my old profile on mastodon.scot is still up there. I switched instances years ago. Maybe I did it wrong or thought I had to keep both. I don’t remember! Is it easy to deleted the original? I don’t want people following that one instead of this account-and it seems the .scot one is very search engine optimised. @pkreissel made an algorithm for mastodon to free us from the tyranny of reverse chronological order and it's totally awesome.

IMHO a customizable algorithm is the only thing mastodon needs to really take things to the next level.

IMHO a customizable algorithm is the only thing mastodon needs to really take things to the next level.

Is there a way to view/use feautured hashtags on mobile? On my phone I can’t see them anywhere. (And on my ipad I only see max three.)
Is it a limitation of the mobile web interface or the default app? (If so, what’s the ‘best’ mastodon app for iOS?)

The use of real names on Mastodon?

I received a (mild) rebuke recently for always referring to my wife here as Mrs Mike.
I always refer to my children as son and daughter.
This set me thinking.

Is it wrong to depersonaluse them like this?

I do it to protect their anonymity.
My wife volunteers at the interface of criminal justice and social services.
My daughter has long term psychiatric issues relating to an abusive marriage.
My son's wife is a police officer who is 'very strongly advised' to obfuscate her own social media life

Should I carry on as I am, give them back their identities, or give them 'false names'?

Another #MastodonTip :
Be sure to use and check out #hashtags . They are the primary method of following topics on #Mastodon . In some forms of the site (browser is different than the app), you can sign up to follow hashtags. I'm not confident enough how to do that to advise you on it, though.

Also, leave a space before and another after any terms you #hashtag for punctuation etc.

Use hashtags related to the subject of your post. Capitalise the start of words in hashtags so that screen readers don't get confused by then.

You can search for hashtags and even follow hashtags.

Boost liberally. Also don't be afraid to reply to posts, it's a lot more friendly here.

I'm on the Mastodon Art Instance as well as here. I've just looked up my profile and the stuff I boost there doesn't show, I'd be interested to know if you receive it. Also, there are accounts I follow there that I can't see here; I thought the federation thing meant you could see toots everywhere if following. Advice welcome

I saw this advice just after joining Mastodon: In addition to adding ALT text to images/screenshots, etc., always add your hashtags at the end of your post to make it easier for screen readers to read through, oh, and capitalize hashtags with multiple words.

So, dear #Fediverse… I’m thinking about firing up a small limited-access but federated #Mastodon instance to organize a comics study workshop with friends. Any recommendations or tips on how to proceed? I’m on a Dreamhost VPS and would like to avoid extra expenses as much as possible.

@watsoncomedian I have to recommend @feditips. There is a great, easy to read guide there.

My tips:

1) Use hashtags, but keep them to the end of your post/toot so your post will be screen reader friendly. Use CamelCase.

2) Use Debirdify or one of the other Twitter scrapers to generate a list of all your followers and follows. You can then import the CSV files into your profile.

3) use Content Warnings for more than NSFW or otherwise potentially offensive posts.

Is there a setting I need to alter to allow me to post the odd photo on here? Also, I seem to have some photos on my timeline that I can’t see. They’re fuzzied out and even when I click on them they don’t change #MastodonNewUsers #mastodonadvice

Hello newcomers! Don't worry, you can have fun wasting time here just like at the old place. My #mastodonAdvice: 1) use preferences to stop autoscrolling 2) search hashtags you like and follow people who post to them 3) add a photo and brief bio to your profile so people will follow you back 4) don't worry about the slowness, it's server overload from new sign-ups 5) hashtag your posts so people can find and follow you 6) there are lots of spreadsheets of scholars by discipline to find people
