Quick question for fediverse developers on how to link to a fediverse profile page on a remote server.

I know there is some ongoing work, eg. https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/fep-07d7-a-custom-url-scheme-and-web-based-protocol-handlers-for-linking-to-activitypub-resources/3588.

Some people will argue against this, but the Atmosphere is (slowly) decentralizing (https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/116126040489956521) and it will soon run into the same issues we're dealing with, like being asked to log in when you click a link to a post that's not on your server/AppView/what have you.

I'm sure they will figure this out, with their deep crypto VC money pockets, but if we can figure this out first, it could really give us a major advantage.

Masto's trending hashtags need adjustments, 99% of the time the hashtags trending are those gamey ones created by the community, yes, I know they are fun to a lot of people, otherwise they wouldn't trend, but they also make it impossible to know the "real events" being talked about in the fediverse. The barrier to overcome the gamey hashtags is high, as of this moment for example, only BadBunny, Discord, and SafeInternetDay cut trough what I see as noise.

- #polars : Definitivamente mi herramienta para dataframes por defecto, después de habituarse a las formas nativas esto es muy claro y eficiente.
- Depurador de #zed: Aunque no he podido lograr que funcione la forma de anexar un proceso en ejecución, el modo de lanzar proceso resulta muy directo, y la interfaz para explorar las variables y la consola de interacción integrada funcionan muy bien

I've said it before, I'll say it again, but here I am saying it right now: Mastodon 4.2's new search is absofuckinglutely wonderful to have. Total game-changer.

I've previously spent hours scrolling through history trying to find specific toots. I can now find those in seconds, and just did (see: https://toot.cat/@dredmorbius/111162458078683845).

just one small inconvenience

on the federated timeline, i enjoy a post and want to read the conversation so i click the toot, i can read everything nice

when i go back i end up on a different place on the timeline, way much earlier, then i have to scroll to the place where i stopped, it also reloads all the toots i have already seen again, wtf?

Can you advice me what i do wrong here?

its not a real problem and i am very happy to be able to read you all, life is suffering, love you

i use the browser version

also i am purposefully on a server far away from the location of my physical ass but still my federated timeline is polluted by my german brethren, its ok, but i d like to read the international toots and not have to scroll through the german stuff again and again

Genuinely hope the #Mastodon #MastoDevs are working on the massive memory leak that makes the #WebClient functionally useless after about an hour.
Seriously, its really bad on #Firefox, I dont know about other #browsers. This seems like some pretty basic foundational stuff. Its been this way for months. What's the problem?

Folks should take a look at the #fullTextsearch function that Eugen is proposing for #Mastodon and how closely it resembles the #search patch of the woman who he kicked off the Mastodon repo GitHub & Discord a couple of months ago. Also, her patch was more configurable that the thing he's bringing to main that has zero attribution of her work. #fediverse #mastodev #MastoDevs

With the most recent updates to Mastodon, I've noticed a significant performance improvement. I think the #mastodevs are kicking ass.

Here are some screenshots of the progress I made today on my prototype #RPG game 🎮 Now you can select wich one of the three main characters you wan to control 😯 run around and jump with animation blending (needs adjustments thou). Also I fixed some bugs from yesterday. Next comes the camera control, I guess 🥵

I just had the chance to try the new "edit" feature of the Mastodon web client.

Fantastic. I was able to correct a typo, just a little thing, but one I had missed with the original posting.

No notifications disappeared.
I didn't need to apologize to the kind people who react to my stuff.

Supposedly, you can generate points by creating content, and you can then use those points to read otherwise paywalled news content.

Even after all that we've seen, I still like the idea of news+social media, because it could be a venue for public discourse about current events.

#mastodevs I have a status I want to post with the API that's 498 characters long. But when I try and post it, I get the following error: 'Mastodon API returned error', 422, 'Unprocessable Entity', 'Validation failed: Text character limit of 500 exceeded'

Any ideas? I'm using mastodon.py to post and shorter statuses work just fine.

How extensive is #hashtag #search on #Mastodon? I've been reading about it but I know my searches are often missing things.

Is there a clear #explanation about how that works? Like which instances get hit and how far back it goes?

I'm also interested in #cultural views. What are the understood rules around hashtag use and what you do with hashtagged items. (I've seen evidence that hashtags ≠ sharable.)

Is this where #mastodevs are desperately sourcing hardware?

@humanetech I'll also raise my annoyance with CWs once more: as these are presently implemented, a heavily CW'd conversation when visited by someone outside the Fediverse, I've started calling this #DirectWebAccess as opposed to authenticated in-network access ... is a wall of roadblocks. Each. Single. Individual. Toot. Must. Be. Individually. Opened. One. At. A. Time. And. Any. Mis-click. Means. Starting. Over. From. Scratch.

This is entirely a design/UI flaw with Mastodon and derivatives that @Gargron and #Mastodevs have so far refused to address, despite it being raised as an issue for years. It's a really shitty first experience for anyone outside Mastodon. (And pretty bad for those of us who do use the site regularly.).

It is possible to both support use of CWs and NOT make the experience a nightmare for all others. There's been no developer will to do so yet.

It's another big news / disturbing news day.

I'm looking at a toot in which the name of a key individual is deliberately obscured. For the sake of those who filter by keywords, I strongly suggest not doing that.

As a reminder:

• CWs hide payload, they also make viewing threads much more difficult, especially when explicitly opened to view in an unauthenticated session. This is a long-standing misfeature of Mastodon that I'd really appreciate @Gargron and #MastoDevs address. I generally though not always limit my use of CWs on account of this. I do include keywords and hashtags which can be filtered if at all possible.

• Many Fediverse interfaces offer keyword filtering. You can drop topics and terms into your profile configuration, either permanently or on a temporary basis.

• If someone begs off a discussion, let them be. My preferred response is simply to apologise and acknowledge, privately. "My apologies, dropped". If you attack in response, you're not a good person, just sayin'.

And as fair warning, I may have things to say on news events. If you'd prefer to mute or block me, that's your prerogative. That said, I think it's critically important that significant issues can be discussed publicly, with intelligence and respect.

Sight impaired users benefit from their screen readers' "understanding" the hashtags with each word capitalized.
