@Kirkman Joshua Corey, who blogs the Aubrey-Maturin Review, has a footnote in a separate post about "Bartleby the Scrivener" on Davies's devotion to Jack. This summer I completed another "circumnavigation" — a complete reading of all the Aubrey-Maturin novels by Patrick O’Brian — and I was struck by something about the character Awkward Davies that I hadn’t noticed in previous readings.

Kustannustoimittajieni kehotuksesta katsoin myös elokuvan Master and Commander, eli se sama mikä perustuu O'Brienin kirjoihin.Yhteneväisyys kirjoihin oli todellakin ilmeinen – sitä samaa hiton sekoilua ilman mitään järjellistä juonta. Eri kirjoista tempaistu kohtauksia, jotka kytkettiin jonkinlaiseen päättömään takaa-ajoon.
Eniten hämmensi Aubreyn ja Maturinin ystävyyden vähä kuvaaminen. Se ei jotenkin ollenkaan välittynyt, ehkä vähän lopussa.
Näyttelijätyö oli sekin niin ja näin. Pääosien esittäjät eivät hääppöisiä. Blakeney, se lapsi, teki ehkä parhaan roolisuorituksen. Bongasimme myös Billy Boydin, joka on tutumpi roolistaan Pippininä (Taru sormusten herrasta).
Näyttävä elokuva kyllä oli, joten sikäli mulle hyödyllinen. Urhoollisesti @Turre kesti rinnallani tämänkin yli kaksituntisen, liikavenytetyn pläjäyksen.
