  1. Tom’s Hardware: College student hacks Taiwan high-speed rail line with software defined radios, stopping four trains — 19 years without crypto key rotation ends in predictable result as hacker sails through 7 layers of protection. “The event brought four trains to a standstill for 48 minutes until the situation was verified as a false alarm, with reportedly no hard stops executed. 2. A friend just showed me the latest Metrolink map. Holy shit, Perris and Mo Val. got stops! That’s big.

That woulda been so game changing when I was living there. No interest in going back to Perris, but hope it’s the win I think it is for the town.

  4. Man playing country music out loud from his phone on the bus.

I hope he gets home to discover that his dog won't hunt, his truck won't start, his wife has run off with the pastor after draining every last drop of liquor in the house, and that he can't even shoot himself because his gun is jammed.

  7. Addison leaders reject an election to leave DART 🚌 🚋 🚏

Addison City Council voted 4-3 not to call a spring election to withdraw from DART. The agency recently began its new Silver Line commuter rail service, which includes a stop in Addison.

  8. Palo Alto is a land of contrasts, but really it's a land of "This is what happens when you let private equity decide what your town is gonna be."

On the one hand: ample access to rideshare and some of the biggest names in research in town.

On the other hand: just walking anywhere is a tedious chore, walking past rows upon rows of businesses competing directly with each other (because they want to be the place you could drive thirty seconds to instead of your destination, as opposed to a mix of resources that you see in a place where people walk to stuff and want to take care of task B while they're standing next to the service provider for task A). And as an out-of-towner, I've discovered that the mass transit support is drastically worse than back home. The website doesn't let you buy a card online, their digital wallet solution was an Android app that's no longer supported...

Bus stop's right there but I can't pay to use the damn bus without driving to a place that'll set me up with an access card, so..............

Nice place to visit but I don't think I'd ever want to live here.

  9. The Guardian: Warsaw opens metro station ‘express’ library to get commuters off their phones. “An ‘express’ library has opened in a new metro station in Warsaw, aiming to provide an appealing cultural space to encourage residents and commuters to forgo smartphones in favour of books and, thanks to fresh herbs growing in a vertical garden, a dash of subterranean greenery too.”

  11. SwissInfo: All aboard? Let the yodelling begin with ‘Sämi the singing driver’. “‘Sämi, will you yodel for us?’ asks a little boy, striped shirt and cowhide belt tightly around his waist, as soon as he gets on board. This request is repeated three times. Then, after picking up the last tourist, Zumbrunn sings a yodel and immediately the buzz on the bus dies down. While the last notes are […]

Some are voiced by professional actors, and others by everyday New Yorkers whom Bass recruited through a grassroots casting process. Some announcements sound like poetry, while some sound like overhearing a conversation. Some are personal […]

Now I think there could be a separate linked list for the general name, in addition to the street/side tied to sign ID.

#MassTransit and #MediatR going commercial on the same day felt like a tipping point.

Tom’s Hardware: This Raspberry Pi map of Manhattan shows real-time subway train status. “Over the years, we’ve covered a few Raspberry Pi plane tracking projects and even one project to track the London Underground but this is the first Manhattan subway train tracker we’ve come across. 17. So you've got a city ... that probably means you've got some sort of mass transit. And Metro Map Maker lets you document that.

  18. I'm looking at messaging that nicely integrates with #dotnet #aspire. It looks like the primus #masstransit is not really a good fit as it does not allow to use the connection that aspire manages.

My favorite for messaging is #wolverinefx but full support is kinda (?) postponed.

Then there is #brighter but that I've never used and couldn't find anything regarding aspire.

  23. The world is building #subways like crazy. #US has pretty much given up
Cities are doubling down on #transit. Why can’t US do the same?
For #Americans, state-of-the art #masstransit like in Istanbul are about as familiar as transporter on Star Trek. As the US lavishes billions on highway expansions and subsidizes tricked-out SUVs, other countries are investing in transit systems that are setting new standards for speed, convenience, and technology

If you are able to visit Tokyo, I definitely recommend trying to navigate the station for the bizarre experience and also to say that you’ve been to the busiest railway station in the world with over 3 million passengers daily.

  29. Going back to the office today. Will be masking of course, though I expect only 1/10 people will also be masked. Still, ventilation is good so that will help.

To get there, LIRR riding a classic. Nostalgia is definitely kicking in as I first rode on one of these decades ago.

  30. #introduction
    Hello! I'm Jonathan.

Although I've lived in the USA for many years, I'm a Brit who doesn't want to take US citizenship. I liked living in France but have to stay in America. I miss the NHS!

Soft left politics, still enraged about Brexit, disappointed with Starmer.

    Books I've enjoyed recently:

-- The Wilsonian Moment: Self-Determination and the International Origins of Anticolonial Nationalism -- Erez Manela

-- Justice Is Conflict -- Stuart Hampshire

    -- Effingers -- Gabriele Tergit

Atheist with an interest in religion.

I drink huge quantities of builder's tea, but treat myself to Darjeeling from time to time.

I also enjoy Campari, IPAs, and White Horse whisky.

I listen to classical music, Kpop, and all sorts of other things too - your YouTube recommendations are always welcome!

Favourite food: quiche lorraine, Central Texas barbecue, smoked salmon. I miss roast lamb, Aero, and Bovril on toast.
