“The most remarkable thing about my mother is that for thirty years she served the family nothing but leftovers. The original meal has never been found.”*…
News you can use…
I kept throwing away food because I couldn’t remember when I bought it. Thursday’s chicken from Monday? No idea if it was still safe. DoesItLast gives a clear answer based on FDA/USDA guidelines, so you can decide with information instead of guessing…
E.g…

As we burp the container, we might spare a thought for a man who made a monumental contribution to food preservation and storage: John Landis Mason; he died on this date in 1902. A tinsmith, he patented the metal screw-on lids for fruit jars that have come to be known as Mason jars (many of which were printed with the line “Mason’s Patent Nov 30th 1858”).
That same year he invented the screw top salt shaker.

#aptgarden update....simplify redux
After years of playing with #hydroponics the lesson I have learned is ..simplify.
5 gal buckets, water, nutrients, container for substrate, cotton rope for wicking , seed, lights....done
l
All the #Aerogarden clones and pricey lights....for my scale and need...bye bye.For my windows it's a scaled down version with #masonjars and net cups instead.
The results over the years are my proof. Simpler makes better. As always, #kratky for the win.

Random home #reduceReuseRecycle tip…
Mayonnaise jar lids (at least in Canada) are exactly the right thread for mason jars. Nice because buying a few plastic lids for mason jars often cost more than a jar of mayonnaise.

Step into the eerie embrace of the Harley Warren #Ghost #Museum, where the echoes of bygone #stars linger like whispers in the dark. Here, the luminaries of yesteryear are preserved in glass prisons, their once-vibrant #spirits now reduced to mere shadows. #Brando, #Candy, #Lee, #Monroe—each name a haunting melody, their essence trapped within the confines of #masonjars, awaiting the curious gaze of the living.

@Violinknitter
Even though I'm doing amazing things with #MasonJars and tempered glass food containers, I still vaguely miss Tupperware culture and products. I stacked those babies all over my cupboards and my fridge. I'm sure that someone is still loving them. -

@coffeespots That looks really yummy! @Dingoroo has started doing something similar for me for work lunches. He found a really neat way of doing it that I'm really enjoying! Making fresh soup in mason jars! There's Udon noodles, veggies, and broth stock in it. All I have to do is fill it with water and microwave for a bit!

@vegos_f06 yeah I don’t love that either, and use very little when I have my own place. But in my current living situation I have to make some concessions to the people who own the house and looooove their Tupperware etc etc. If I’m going to make more meals to freeze, though, I think I’ll have to get my glass containers out of storage. Mostly I use a lot of #MasonJars for things, including eg. homemade yoghurt, #sourdough starter, lactofermented veg, etc. (as well as preserves obviously)

I do not get rid of glass jars, be it an empty pickle jar or a jam jar. They all get used and reused. I have a small collection of antique jars. I often wonder what the person was thinking & feeling when they were canning food in 1932, 1936, 1945, 1948, 1951, 1956. If you’re growing your own food and preserving it, sharing it, think of the work that goes into that. It’s an act of love. It’s community. It’s beautiful.
