Aug 15 at 11:27 AM EDTUpdate: California Complex Incident Management Team 7, led by Incident Commander Tom Clemo, assumed command of the Bear Gulch Fire at 7:00 a.m. on August 15, 2025. Yesterday, the fire remained active on the northwest perimeter spreading further into drainages. Near the southern perimeter, west of Lake Cushman, crews continued structure protection and maintained sprinkler systems. Fire personnel were supported by helicopters with water drops on the fire’s edge. Approximately 1 inch of rainfall is expected over the next 24 hours. This raises concerns about potential debris flows from steep terrain, especially during this afternoon and evening. To prioritize firefighter safety, a tactical pause will occur in parts of the perimeter during this operational period. Crews will be strategically positioned in areas where they can operate with reduced risk. Helicopters and Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) will remain available to provide support to firefighters on the ground and structure protection.
Fire Behavior: Fire activity is expected to reduce over the next 24 hours. Instances of rollout and snag fall will continue, with potential to spread the fire. Fire behavior is expected to decrease under cooler wetter conditions with a warming trend expected later in the week that may increase fire activity.

Update: After a couple of cooler days with higher humidity levels, temperatures are forecasted to increase over the weekend, leading to drier fuels and increased fire activity through early next week. Firefighters are focused on fully suppressing the fire as safely and efficiently as possible while working to keep homes, campgrounds, and other structures and values protected.Crews continue improving road systems and utilizing natural features to serve as a fuel break to prevent fire spread. West of the lake, hundreds of sprinklers are running for added protection of homes and structures in the Copper Creek and Dry Creek areas. Structure protection specialists are working as well southwest of Lake Cushman to keep buildings more defensible. Fire crews in the Staircase area are running sprinklers, mopping up, and removing flammable materials near infrastructure. Fuel removal work continues around Brown Creek Campground...
Fire Behavior: Yesterday, fire activity was limited by recent rain and higher humidity, although some perimeter growth occurred. Heavy fuels are burning with high intensity under dense canopies, preheating adjacent fuels. Burning logs and other debris rolling downhill may contribute to moderate fire spread.

Aug 7 at 12:47 PM EDTUpdate: Rain fell over the fire yesterday and moderated fire behavior resulting in minimal perimeter growth. Helicopters were grounded due to limited visibility from rain and clouds, but operations are expected to resume today. Structure protection continues around the Copper and Dry Creek inholdings. Hose and sprinkler kit deployment resumed to protect boat-in residences along Lake Cushman and will continue today. In the Staircase area of Olympic National Park, crews will run pumps and maintain sprinklers for structure and resource protection. Firefighters and natural resource specialists removed surface fuels and installed sprinklers around old growth Douglas Fir trees that serve as important bird habitat. South of the fire on the Olympic National Forest, crews dropped dead trees and masticated them to protect structures and values at Lebar Horse Camp and Brown Creek Campground. Mastication work and hand line improvement continue southeast of the fire. Snagging on State Route 119 is completed.
Fire Behavior: Significant rain led to minimal fire perimeter growth. Heavy dead and down trees under the dense forest canopy continue to burn with relatively high intensity. A drying trend will begin this afternoon. Rolling and falling material on slopes will be an ongoing occurrence.
