Anyone have mason bee houses? Any advice? Do I have to over-winter cocoons in my fridge in the Berkshire hills of Mass? Aren't they native?

Any help or advice is appreciated. Boosts appreciated.

I know nothing. Are cardboard or paper tubes good? Waxed wood? Is pine wood bad? Plastic housing? Cedar? Sprays? How often to clean? Too late for mason bees (overnight high 40s-65F/daytime 70s); planting usually starts after late May.

    Thanks.

  2. Increasing wintertime temperatures and drought decrease the fecundity of the mason bee *Osmia bruneri* and change the sex ratio of offspring from 1.3:1 to 0.33:1. These may be indirect effects of changes in the plant communities.

  3. I could obsessively sand some bee holes and I have plenty of cedar, but I was not looking to learn how to solder copper.

  4. For #EarthDay, I am happy to report the return of this red-rumped #Bumblebee beauty, #BombusMelanopygus. I have only seen this type in our garden on two other occasions, and never so early in the spring. Our #MasonBees, #BlueOrchardBees, or #BOBS have filled all the houses we put up, and they have taken over the stack of air drying Port Orford Cedar.

  5. Found this Houdini fly (Cacoxenus indagator) lurking around one of my bee hotels today. They are kleptoparasites of mason bees (Osmia spp.) and are not native to North America. They are the number one reason why nesting tubes in my area (Pennsylvania) should be cleaned during the winter. BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THEM. #BeeHotel #InsectHotel #MasonBees #bee #bees #flies #diptera #inaturalist #insects

  6. In bee news, male Osmia are showing up at the insect hotel in my back yard (Swarthmore, PA, USA). The females never choose to use these tunnels, sadly, opting instead for the smaller, paper-lined cavities in the wood blocks. #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #MasonBees #bees #nature #pollinators #insects

  7. The Mason Bee (Blue Orchard Bee) House is fully occupied. They were extremely active building nests until a few days ago. Now they mature, and we'll see how many emerge next spring.

Welp, it seems like our mason bees had some parasites. One still-alive carpet beetle larva, one dead chalcid wasp, and many houdini fly larvae. Perhaps also cuckoo bees and chalkbrood fungus. Currently deploying mitigation measures and will have to do better at the end of this season. Poor little bees.

  9. There’s a weekly #invertebrate challenge this year called #InsertAnInvert2024 and January is about insects in and near our homes so I thought I should share my ‘Redbud and the Bees’ #multimedia piece (#linocut #woodcut #printmaking #collage) which I made for a show about urban ecology, climate change and human animal conflict. 🧵1/n

  10. For #PollinatorWeek my ‘Redbud and the Bees’ #multimedia piece (#linocut #woodcut #printmaking #collage) explores how #redbud trees, are increasingly common in Toronto due to their popularity with gardeners and a warming climate. They are popular with our native #bees but this includes the Eastern carpenter bee (whose range is also expanding with climate change) …
