  1. [PDF] How To Construct a Study, All Wood #MasonBee House

    by Don Harper

"The construction method described below is based on a presentation made by Lawrence County Master Gardener Dave Hughes in 2007. The construction process can obviously be modified, depending on the availability of power
tools and the preference for using one piece of 4x6 wood instead of two pieces of 2x6. Construction, once you are
familiar with the process, requires about a day. Waiting for glue to dry is the only part of the process that really slows
    down construction.

"Given the diminution of populations of honeybees due to colony collapse disorder, it is hoped that everyone with a
garden will make at least one of these houses available for mason bees in which to lay eggs. This will lead to the next generation of bees, and over time increase the population of these #NativePollinators."

  2. Day 8 #SciArtSeptember prompt niche. Can we talk about the cutest nesting strategy going? The Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta) is a small North American blue bee which makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! In my linocut I show this adorable little pollinator with a Cepaea shell. Each print is 8” by 8” on delicate Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper.

When I planned this print I wanted to make 🧵

  4. Thinking about native plants and native pollinators, this is an important local bee, Osmia Lignaria, known as the orchard mason bee, or blue orchard bee, in a lino block print on Japanese kozo (mulberry) paper with gorgeous, blue washi chine collé (collaged fine Japanese paper) pollinating a blueberry flower.

We often think of bees as living in hives, but these bees live in 🧵

  5. Georgia mason bee (Osmia georgica) exiting her nesting tunnel after depositing a load of pollen. I don't think I've ever seen one on any of the flowers in my yard but they are supposed to be generalists. That said, it's reported (by Paula Sharp & Ross Eatman) that they adore fleabane, positioning their head in the center of the flower and spinning around. #MasonBee #InsectHotel #BeeHotel #osmia #bee #bees #insect

  6. Mason Bees are one of our most important pollinators, particularly for fruit trees like apples that are in blossom in early April.
I've had several simple bee 'hotels' on my shed for a few years.
My simple bee hotel design uses a 15cm length of an old fence post with nine 7 or 8 mm holes. The holes are about 12cm deep i.e. they don't go right through. #MasonBee #allotment

  7. Aż w końcu tak. No i teraz w sumie młode powinno już wyżerać te pyłki, co mu matka zamurowała. I latem wyjdzie. Ciekawe czy powie innym, że w naszym dużym pokoju jest dobra miejscówka. (5/5)

  8. With eye month, #InsertAnInvert2024 has given me another excuse to talk about bees. How many eyes do you think bees have? I’ve been making art about bees for years, looking at photos and specimens and talking to entomologists but I only recently learned something which seems a basic fact of bee anatomy: they have FIVE eyes! More precisely, bees like this Osmia lignaria (a blue orchard mason bee) 🧵1/n

  9. Commissioned by a graduating entomologist for her supervisor, this is an important local bee, Osmia Lignaria, known as the orchard mason bee, or blue orchard bee, in a lino block print on Japanese kozo (mulberry) paper with gorgeous, blue washi chine collé (collaged fine Japanese paper) pollinating a blueberry flower.

  10. My lino print with collaged Japanese washi papers on a white mulberry leaf paper with bark inclusions shows blossoming cherry branches & two of our wild, native bees: the bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) and the Blue Orchard Mason Bee (Osmia lignaria). I printed it by hand on Japanese kozo (or mulberry paper), 16” x 20” with various collaged Japanese washi papers for the blossoms, bee bodies and wings.🧵

  11. We made a bee house. Most of the parts are leftover wood and hardware, but we did purchase the hollow reeds. We plan on harvesting some bamboo for larger bore reeds. No residents have moved in yet.

  12. Osmia cornifrons, aka horn-faced #masonBee ? Looked like she was trying to warm up by the south facing kitchen door before flying away.
(There are some early cherry blossoms on the other side of the house now🌸🐝)

  13. The #insertaninvert2024 prompt is “housing” about invertebrate architecture & nests they build, but I’m going to talk about a species who borrows rather than builds because it’s the sweetest thing! Like an illustration in a fairytale for children, the Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta), a small North American blue bee makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! How adorable is that!? 🧵1/

  14. I am interpreting the prompts quite loosely but I thought I would share this print for #InsertAnInvert2024 as the are ground-nest bees who live near us. My lino block print with collaged Japanese washi papers on a white mulberry leaf paper with bark inclusions shows blossoming cherry branches and two of our wild, native bees: the bumblebee (Bombus impatiens) and the Blue Orchard Mason Bee (Osmia lignaria). 🧵1

  15. I am starting #ArtAdventCalendar with this Eastern Snail Shell Mason Bee (Osmia conjuncta), a small North American blue bee which makes nests in suitable empty snail shells! In my linocut I show this adorable little pollinator with a Cepaea shell. Each print is 8” by 8” on delicate Japanese kozo (or mulberry) paper. I am truly charmed by the idea of a snail shell nest!

  16. For the #SciArtSeptember prompt “metallic” my linocut Osmia lignaria, the metallic blue orchard mason bee.

We think of bees as living in hives, but these bees live in reeds or natural holes which they divide into chambers with mud walls. We also tend to picture yellow and black stripes, but this small bee is blue to blue-green. 🧵1/2
