Not exactly the same thing, but this reminds me -
On the Tube the other day, I had luggage so I was queueing for the lift. The person in front of me starts coughing and covering her mouth, and she's obviously already noticed my mask, because in between coughs she's looking over at me and saying "oh I'm sorry".
I said something like "don't worry, I'm probably the best protected person here" :-)
I don't think she understood what I meant though! She was still explaining (cough, cough) "I have hay fever".
I think it says something about the symbolism of mask = sickness. It doesn't seem to occur to people that the mask is a functional thing, and in practical terms it's often the people _without_ a good mask who are more at risk.
(Same with the flip side - avoiding sitting next to me, and I'm inwardly like "I'm the _least_ likely person on this bus to give you anything!" haha.)
She was kind in intention though. People can be lovely. I'm pretty sure I get more offers of help with my luggage than I did in the before times, as well.

"Solidarity Pride" in #Glasgow on Saturday, i.e. 18 July 2026, free event.
Looks interesting - I'd want to go if I were near there.
Includes "workshop on public speaking" from Ruth Pearce, "at the Glasgow Solidarity Pride Hub in the Pyramid at Anderston ... during the afternoon for about an hour".
Ruth's post says "The wider event is going to be super cool, with loads of amazing workshops, stalls, and food produced by local queer organisations."
And the poster says "Masked until 1pm". That's interesting to me as a way of handling the different needs and different levels of willingness around infection safety. It looks as though Ruth's workshop will be _after_ the masking-watershed, but I wouldn't be surprised if having the earlier masked timeframe helps to make it more socially comfortable to mask in the afternoon too.

"The evidence supporting respiratory person-to-person transmission of ANDV is now substantial and comes from epidemiological, biological, and operational observations. ...
"Experimental evidence supports respiratory and salivary pathways of transmission. Yet we are unaware of any research which has examined aerosol shedding dynamics or the timing of contagiousness relative to symptom onset. ...
"There is also strong evidence that respirators provide greater protection than surgical masks for healthcare workers against respiratory infections when worn continuously indoors. ...
"Although efficient community transmission comparable to measles or SARS-CoV-2 has not been demonstrated, this is not justification for dismissing respiratory risk. ...

Event: Covid Community Care Fundraiser.
• Vegan bake sale with gluten-free options.
• Crafts: make stickers and mask chains.Location: Outdoors at the Rising Sun Arts Centre, Reading, RG1 2ST, with access to the toilets indoors. Free masks provided.
Covid precautions:
- Masks required, FFP2 or better, at all times in craft/bake sale area. Please step away if you need a break or to eat or drink. Free masks provided.
- Do not attend if you have any symptoms of contagious illness such as a cough or cold.
- If you wish to attend and cannot wear a mask, please contact us beforehand so we can arrange a PlusLife covid test for you.
- Even if you will be masking, covid testing beforehand with Rapid Antigen Tests (widely available in boots, superdrug, savers, etc) is encouraged! These tests are more reliable if you can take two, 48 hours apart.
- We will be outdoors outside of the arts centre, but we will have access to toilets indoors.

I read this article yesterday and I'm still musing on it. There's something I really like about the idea of framing our position & commitments as "a subculture". That rings true to me.

Dad got #covid this summer with my cousin and sister because they all just wanted a British family birthday here in #BC for his 80th.
We had been booked to join them up coast but found out two days prior to leaving. We called off the trip with several folks covid sick at the house we were planning to stay.
It was then we discovered #bcferries no longer refunds for covid cancellations, as to them the pandemic is over. We had to pay to drop our reservation days from our trip, knowing the ferry we had reserved would only be 75% full.
For #BritishColumbia businesses like #bcferries, ignoring the pandemic is just an extra cash grab. Book another ferry now, pay us 20 bucks or go get sick. They ultimately profited off our loss.
