  5. I was stuck at work this afternoon for longer than expected and so I used that time for a spot of birding.

I found some Masked Lapwing chicks, a family of Bush-Stone Curlews and a ridiculous Little Corella.

  6. Today's birds on campus are decidedly spring-themed.

We have a trio of Pied Currawong fledglings.
A parent Masked Lapwing dutifully sitting on eggs.
A Grey Butcherbird fledgling excitedly calling for food as its parent turns up to feed it.
And not following the theme, a Buff-banded Rail on the edge of the lake.

  8. Campus birds from the past couple of days.

Of the two Masked Lapwing chicks I found a couple of weeks back, it seems only one remains, but it's healthy looking and foraging for itself.

I also came across a couple of disapproving Bush Stone-Curlews, and this morning, a Pacific Black Duck, perched on a rock in the lake, absorbing the morning sun.

  10. One of the two tiny (less than a week old) Masked Lapwing chicks at work. This one found some tasty breakfast.

  12. I stalked the Masked Lapwing chicks this morning, since the light was nice, and they were happily foraging on the lawn.

  14. Our resident Swamp Wallaby was in the front yard this morning :)

Then at work, I saw a Bush Stone-Curlew sunning itself, and a couple of baby Masked Lapwings (probably a day or two old).

  16. You can see why these birds used to be called Spur-winged Plovers. They're actually Masked Lapwings (not plovers at all, although people still call them that colloquially)

  18. More birds encountered today. All were wild, even though I saw three of them at the Bonorong Sanctuary (they had just flown in, presumably because it was a safe place, and there was food).

Forest Raven, Eastern Rosella, Masked Lapwing and earlier this morning at Mt Field, a Little Black Cormorant (one of four or five fishing in a small dam).

  20. A couple of fairly common birds from my walk in to work this morning.

An Australian Magpie, and a Masked Lapwing.

  22. In good news for lapwing-human relations, someone has kindly placed some cones around this nesting lapwing (who of course decided the gravel drive was the perfect spot to raise her babies). Hopefully they remember this when the babies hatch and don't try to murder us all from the sky.

  24. This is what the little fluff balls grow up in to. One of the parents carefully watching out for the chicks while I was trying to be unobtrusive.

The adult birds have a bony spur on the leading edge of their wings, which they use to defend themselves and their brood.

Luckily, these birds are on a University campus, and are very used to people, so don't usually attack.
