(ARD)

Happy #Caturday !
Mary Pickford with a silver screen colleague...
I mention Mary in a brief passage of banter from my first novel, GreenWood Tree:
'Well, at least I don't deluge you with flattery and request for autographs. You'd really detest that.'
'That reminds me: someone on the train - '
'Don't tell me, he asked you for a signature, and was most put out when you turned out not to be Mary Pickford.'
'Do stop being an idiot and listen...'
Mary Pickford in “Fanchon the Cricket” (1915). I have to admit this is the first of her movies as an actress that I’ve seen. (I’ve seen a few she produced in the 1930s-‘40s)
A lot can be said about Lottie and Jack Pickford but mostly they (especially Jack) just didn’t quite live up to their potential. It’s mindblowing that this film was found, restored and that we can see all of them on screen together

Ad for the world premiere of “One Rainy Afternoon” (1936), starring Francis Lederer and Ida Lupino, at the Rivoli Theater in New York City.
Produced by Mary Pickford and Jesse L. Lasky: “Two of the film industry’s greatest personalities present the first offering of their new enterprise”
And here’s all of the #SilentFilm on TCM in July (that I can tell from the schedule that I’ve seen but I’ll update this if I find out more)

#OnThisDay, 24 June 1916, Mary Pickford becomes the first Hollywood star to sign a million dollar contract.
Pickford was a queen of PR as well as the screen. Standard studio contracts were for a year. She signed for two years as both an actor and a producer, bumping the figure over the $1m barrier and getting all the headlines.

Stella Maris (1918), a huge hit for Mary Pickford. She plays dual roles and she's excellent. It's pure melodrama, and it's full-on melodrama, but I have no problem with melodrama.
