  1. New #review today: "Not long ago I wrote about Aaron Diehl’s Zodiac Suite, an album of music composed by #MaryLouWilliams in the 40s. Pianist #AdamFairhall and drummer #JohnnyHunter take on more of Williams’ oeuvre on Play Mary Lou Williams. Being a piano and drums duo, the result is of course quite different in sound than Diehl’s piano trio with lots of guests. And it’s on Discus Music, so you can expect an element of the #AvantGarde." #ExposeOnline #jazz expose.org/index.php/articles/

  3. New #review today: "After decades of neglect, the musical legacy of #MaryLouWilliams (1910-1981) has lately started to get long-overdue notice. One of her major works was Zodiac Suite, written from 1942-1945, which blends #jazz and classical influences in twelve pieces, one for each sign of the zodiac. Now pianist #AaronDiehl presents an arrangement for his trio..." #ExposeOnline expose.org/index.php/articles/

Kelley knew when the documentary was made, Mary Lou Williams was dying of cancer. He found that most of the music was lost.

He decided to complete the work in cross-generational collaboration.

This video the premier of "History..." from earlier this year. #MaryLouWilliams last work. [Edit: Piece starts at about 1:40 in this program]

Duke music professor Anthony Kelley, during the Covid lockdowns, watched a documentary where the Duke Wind Symphony was practicing new music by MARY LOU WILLIAMS. In 1981, she was Duke's first artist in residence.

Kelley had never seen the music to this work, though. He started to hunt for it. An interview where he tells his story is below. (Or go to next post in thread.)

Brilliant #MaryLouWilliams was asked to arrange for Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, and Louis Armstrong, but for unfortunate factors we know, her genius was mostly lost to history until recently.

🎹 Here's a standard you've probably heard - that she wrote. Decades afterwards, check out her rocking piano playing skills as she switches styles a few times.

  7. Mary Lou Williams live concert of their 'Zodiac Suite'. Reissued on CD back in the 90s but I've never seen a copy. Really wish someone would release it again on CD or legit download. They would get at least one sale from me!

Noticed today someone had uploaded the whole 1945 concert on YouTube. Listening to it now for the first time. It's as magic as I'd hoped it would be. Proper made my day.

  8. Posting this one tonight just in case anyone needs cheering up.

An hour of Mary Lou Williams with Carline Ray. It's just wonderful.

Mary Lou was a giant and comes across as such a strong gentle soul. A legend in music.

  9. The Ringer’s 60 Songs That Explain the 90s with Rob Harvilla. Putting together a tv console that, in the exasperated end, won’t fit our new pc gaming box. But I get a deep dive on TLC’s Scrubs, reminded about the Supremes. TLC, arguably the biggest girl group of all time (in sales).

Guest is Danyel Smith’s, now I’m introduced to Black Girl Songbook and I’ve got more audio content.

  10. Half an hour of Mary Lou Williams talking about their early life, jazz and playing in the Andy Kirk band in the 1930s. Just a wonderful window into an exciting time for Jazz, which Mary Lou was such an important part of. Really worth a listen.

Frog Record's wonderful CD 'Andy Kirk and his Twelve Clouds of Joy' is a must to hear Mary Lou's early playing and arranging.

  11. A little bit of Mary Lou Williams to start the weekend off on a good note, a very good note (just wish the video was longer!).

Call it Jazz, call it whatever you want. Mary Lou Williams was a giant.

    Have a great weekend everyone.

  13. I boosted a wonderful photo of Mary Lou Williams just now, one of my favourite piano players. Mary Lou's playing is so joyous. Just makes me feel happy. I thought I'd toot this clip from 1978 (31 years after the photo) and just 3 years before they left this planet. With Mary Lou is the all time great Jo Jones on drums, hard not to smile all the way through the wonderful drum solo. Ronnie Boykins, Sun Ra's long time bassist too!

  14. Mary Lou Williams walked taller than most in a land of giants.

Their version of 'It ain't necessarily so' from the early 60s is as good as it gets. I was needing to hear this today.
