  5. Mary Shelley’s Hidden Scotland
    13 December, Edinburgh – £18.60

The time Mary Shelley spent as a girl in Scotland – an “eyry of freedom” – helped shape her writing, in FRANKENSTEIN as well as in her less widely-known THE FORTUNES OF PERKIN WARBECK and THE LAST MAN. Dr Emily Alder explores the influence of Scotland on Shelley & her fiction.

I arrived at the #Frankenstein statue in #Plainpalais, when four tourists from #USA showed up to photograph it.

I offered them a dramatic recitation of the bit in chapter VII where Frankenstein encounters his creation in Plainpalais.

They politely applauded, but didn't tip.

  15. Looking into some public domain stories I could read (and record) for spooky season. One early possibility is Mary Shelley's The Invisible Girl. The story is about 5.6K long. QPrompt estimates a read time of 51 minutes. I read a bit faster than it suggests. Neither here nor there, though.

One of my editing tools reminds me if a sentence is longer than 40 words.

Just about every paragraph of The Invisible Girl has at least one sentence that goes well over that limit.

  16. 10th September

Today in 1816, Mary Shelley and her husband, Percy, arrived in Bath. Mary’s journal states: “Arrive at Bath about two – dine and spend the evening in looking for lodgings”.

Mary didn’t spend that much time in Somerset, but her stay in Bath was very significant. Staying until early 1817, she wrote much of Frankenstein whilst living there. She was only 19 at the time.

Mary features in On This Day in Somerset.
