I saw the legendary Mary Beard last night at Melbourne Recital Centre.
I even got my question read out / answered (quite the thrill for me). I asked about her reaction to the recent meme of men being asked how often they "think about the Roman Empire?" - it struck me as a weirdly gendered phenomenon. Having her unpack this was interesting.

Finished listening to #SPQR by #MaryBeard. It's good but not everything I was hoping for. There's a lot of Roman history and the names get all mixed up in my head like they're Russians in a story by Dostoevsky. I want to know everything about how these ideas we now mostly accept as essential to civilization came to be. #LiberalValues
