Well, the polls across the country have closed, and results continue to trickle in. In the race of greatest interest to everyone, here's where things stand:

Marxist-Leninist: 362

As you can see, Team Karl really did put in the extra effort and managed to retake the lead after looking like a certain loser earlier in the evening.

It's nice to see that both of the Marijuana Party's supporters managed to make it to the polls before they closed. The Rhinoceros Party managed to retake their lead from the Libertarians after some nervous times earlier on.

The real hero of the evening is the No Affiliation Party, flirting with 3-digit votes. Maybe they can pull it off before this thing is over.

Sentenced to death, Trỗi got a reprieve after the FALN, a #Venezuelan #MarxistLeninist #guerrilla group, kidnapped US Air Force Lieutenant Colonel Michael Smolen in revenge for Trỗi's sentence. The group threatened to kill Smolen if Trỗi was executed. Smolen was eventually released unharmed, and Trỗi was shot by firing squad shortly thereafter in Chí Hòa Prison.

In the West, Trỗi's arrest went largely unreported. Major news media did not report on Trỗi at all until the #FALN kidnapping episode. His anonymity persisted after his execution, despite the honors bestowed upon him in the #EasternBloc. Apart from advocacy by #revolutionaries like the Weather Underground & a brief mention in Abbie Hoffman's Steal This Book (1971) as a "Vietnamese hero", Trỗi is still rarely acknowledged in Western accounts of the #VietnamWar.

Many cities in Vietnam have named major streets after him. In #HồChíMinh City, the road upon which McNamara traveled ,& where Trỗi planned to assassinate him is named Nguyen Van Troi Boulevard & a memorial park, Bia tưởng niệm Anh Hung Liet Si Nguyễn Văn Trỗi is located near the former Cong Ly Bridge. In #ĐàNẵng, the Nguyễn Văn Trỗi Bridge spans the Hàn River. Other countries have commemorated Trỗi, particularly #Cuba. A 14,000-seat public stadium in #Guantánamo is named Nguyen Van Troi Stadium & his statue overlooks Nguyen Van Troi Park in #Havana; the city also has a school & hospital named for him.

Anti-war activists Jane Fonda & Tom Hayden named their son, an actor now known as Troy Garity, in honor of Trỗi.

The 1975 film Chronicle of a #LatinAmerican subversive (Spanish: Crónica de un subversivo latinoamericano) by director Mauricio Walerstein, narrates the kidnapping episode of Colonel Smolen by FALN guerrillas in response to Trỗi's death sentence.

For all the revisionists hyping up the "Marxish-Leninish" Anura Kumara Dissanayake of the new JVP-led gov't of Sri Lanka, here's the Sri Lanka BRI (Belt and Road Initiative) director Yasiru Ranaraja saying that JVP's economic policies don't seem any different to him from the outgoing neoliberal ones. #facts (He is still very positive about him though, of course. 🤔)

The problem here is that, when revisionists present their (in this case, Tamil-genocidal) liberalism as Marxism and fail to stop the economic crisis because they haven't built socialism -- the JVP doesn't even want to nationalize large industry like mining -- it further confuses the masses about how to end capitalism. This is roughly the same approach that fascist governments began taking a century ago to prolong capital's reign.

As Donald Trump’s erratic messaging increasingly resembles a strategy of throwing ketchup at the wall and seeing how much of it sticks, one attack line looks especially unhinged: the accusation, most notably in tweets by Trump and his new superfan Elon Musk with AI-generated fake images, that Vice President Kamala Harris is a Communist or a Marxist.

Yes, as if it were 1950 and Sen. Joseph McCarthy of Wisconsin had just flourished his first list of alleged Communists lurking in the State Department.

That notion is idiotic on its face. A member of the Democratic Party suggesting that companies can abuse power and that governments should act to prevent those actions and address their consequences is not in the same neighborhood, Zip code or state as advocating collective ownership of the means of production under the dictatorship of the proletariat. Higher marginal tax rates and more stringent consumer-protection laws do not constitute the imposition of Marxist-Leninism, no matter how much you might hate to pay the former or live under the economic consequences of the latter.

That comparison is especially offensive here, in this city that documents the crimes of the Communist regime of the German “Democratic” “Republic” in places like the Berlin Wall Memorial and the Stasi Museum. The legacy of Communist tyranny is literally underfoot, in the form of the double row of cobblestones that marks much of the path of the Berlin Wall across streets and sidewalks.

It also makes me personally angry as somebody who has spent a tiny amount of time in actual Communist countries–the Soviet Union in 1989, China five times in the last 30 years. I know what Communism looks like, I hate what it has done to people around the world, and I can recognize the difference between that grotesque ideology and the stuff of contemporary American political debates.

(The picture at the left is the teenage version of myself in the Kremlin; I did not get arrested for wearing that Amnesty International t-shirt but I’d like to think that I got some dirty looks.)

German history provides another useful parallel: Here, the Communist strategy after 1945 was to win one election and then make the others meaningless. That should be good cause for the architect of the Jan. 6 attempted coup to take a long look in the mirror before throwing around Communist comparisons–but we all know Trump didn’t get elected in 2016 for his contemplative nature.

And as I was writing this, the absurdity of the former president’s “Comrade Kamala” argument leveled up yet again Wednesday with the unsealing of a Department of Justice indictment alleging that Russian operatives arranged six-figure monthly payments to right-wing influencers who rank among Trump’s biggest supporters. Will those allegations stop them from parroting his new talking point about his opponent? I think we know the answer there.

These people exhuming McCarthy today are not serious people. None of them deserves your attention, much less your vote.
